If you don't have to manage your client's email and their email archiver Acronis works very well. If you're looking for just a backup service for what's on a particular computer then Acronis is perfect. It is easy to use, so newcomers are not overwhelmed with features. It does not include as robust features as Barracuda and Cloudberry, but it does work well as just a backup.

Very good for quick onsite file and email restores. The built-in granular email restore tool is honestly amazing. The file restore options are similarly useful allowing the restoration of a single file or email from any restore point, making those little restore jobs super quick. It might not be the best for a bare metal restore however, as while it does have this functionality, it requires some additional setup of a server before a backup to allow this to work.

Pros
Acronis
  • Image based backups. After the initial backup, the backups happen quite quickly. This allows for multiple backups per day.
  • We have different classes of data which requires different retention policies. Acronis makes that easy to manage.
  • Restoration can be done directly to hardware or to a VM. This makes it easy to migrate a physical server to a VM.

  • All in one spot for backup, restore, and security for off site locations.
  • Well priced for the large swathe of features it provides.
  • Low learning curve for administrators.

Cons
Acronis
  • Search function for restore points on boot media.
  • After upgrading to a newer build, some fixed issues may reappear.
  • Hard to cancel jobs, but it looks like version 16 is better on that. We have run version 16 for only a month.

  • Scalability. Main issue is each appliance has a finite space for backups, and can't be increased on the box itself without replacing it with another appliance completely.
  • Onboard interface. Doesn't have an interface that's accessible via the web natively. While that's great for security, it is a little awkward if you need to access it from offsite.

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Usability
Acronis
This product a solid product to use in our current environment. Great support. The cost is on the high side, but manageable. This product integrates well with our Scale Computing HyperConvergence solution. I feel that there are other products out there coming into the realm and expanding their reach in the backup market providing my organization more backup solution options. I hope that Acronis continues to evolve their product and stay in competition with the to solution providers

It's very easy to use. Plug it in, run through the wizard and you're pretty much set. Hardly ever have to go back in and check on it. Everything can be scheduled fairly granularly. The console is simple and laid out well. While doing a restore takes a number of steps, it is not hard to follow what you're doing. A few things couple be displayed better, but the built in help options do explain things well enough.

Support Rating
Acronis
I only got one issue resolved for more than 20 cases open. The escalation is ineffective. Most of the time, I have the feeling that I know the solution better than the support technician. Overall, case management is time-consuming, as our resolution rate is really low

[I] have only used it a couple of times, but they've always been responsive and solved the issues I've had. Time to get to a person was fairly low, under 10 minutes each time.

I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered
Acronis
Acronis Cyber Protect is usually the best choice for SMBs: it offers the widest range of functionalities for less €. On top of that, the principle of the console which gives access to all products is a nice differentiator, and the killer feature is the "DR" button!

Barracuda had the best console of the three we evaluated. Cloud hosted it was the easiest to access. However, it took forever to do the initial seeding backup, and then the nightly backups ran over into the next day. It was just so slow to do the backups - we never even tried a restore. The resulting backups also seemed to take up a significant amount of the appliances space, it was almost 3/4 full from the get go. Unitrends did not have natively a granular email restore option, it had a third-party option, but that was not something we were interested in. It also took a long time to run the backups. Arcserve was the fastest by far, [as] it did not fill up as much (way better deduplication) and it had a built-in granular email restore. While I wish it had a cloud console, overall it had the most important features we were looking for.

I would love it if they offered better cloud space pricing or even "unlimited"

Scalability
Acronis
The ability to back up multiple servers from one source is a great tool to have for businesses that have equipment in different locations on the same network with a variety of software data to back up such as SQL, Exchange or a Files Server. You can decide to purchase individual server licenses as well if you would like to keep the process separate or have multiple sites where your data is housed.

Return on Investment
Acronis
  • Every times you restore a file, you see the value and the ROI of backup.
  • Backup is a great protection against ransomware, you can always restore files that has been infected.
  • When you want to go back in previous version of files, it can be life saver.

  • Increased costs due to having duplicates of functions we have at the main site.
  • Less complex than having to put full enterprise servers for these functions.
  • Effort saved in having all-in-one versus single systems.
