Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

Qstream

Qstream is great when used for reinforcement of training conducted. Especially when that training is detailed or complex, Qstream will help to embed key concepts and drive adoption while ensuring reps are interacting.

Pros

  • Captivate allows the user the ability to create a drag n drop method within your presentation. I was able to successfully incorporate an activity within my course module that would allow the learner the chance to test their knowledge by dragging and dropping items into the correct sections. I found that to be nice and pretty seamless.
  • Captivate allows the user to create and include states and actions. I think this is important because it allows for the creator to make engaging and interactive slides that will hopefully keep the learner motivate and engaged in the material.
  • Captivate has the options of demo and simulation slide presentations. I found these to be useful within the course I was building because it prevented me from having to complete extra steps of using a different video caption software tool then having to upload it into Captivate. This feature was already included within Captivate which made it nice and easy to access and incorporate into my presentation.

  • Gamification: gets reps involved in ways that keep it interesting while bringing in elements of competition.
  • Mobile: ease of use and direct access to reps while on the move. The interface is intuitive and able to be interacted with in quick increments rather than lengthy elearning.
  • Coaching: provides direct insights into who is coping and who is not so that enablement efforts can be focused.

Cons

  • Captivate can stagnate and is less user-friendly when it comes to adding animations and certain transitions on your presentation.
  • I found that Captivate wasn't always so user-friendly when it came to using the Demo presentation feature. There were times when I'd have to re-record my steps because for some reason it wasn't accepting certain clicks and/or it would capture things I didn't want it to capture.
  • I found myself getting frustrated a lot when using Captivate because some of the things that I was used to clicking/creating on a different software tool (that was more user-friendly) and the results I was looking for caused me to take extra steps when using Captivate.

  • Reporting: we only had access to some of the reports so would have liked to see more detail and have the ability to create custom reports.
  • Licensing: we accessed qstream via Growthplay so only had access to limited features. Would like to see this extended so that we could truly experience all of the qstream benefits.
  • Content Creation: we were not able to create our own questions and streams but had to rely on the external team. Self-creation and self-directed streams would have been preferable.

We are all in with Adobe products as creative tools, but are leaning more and more on Articulate for course development. It is likely that Captivate will continue to be a tool in our belt even if it isn't our immediate go to

Qstream is good in terms of gamification and driving adoption. However we are looking for a platform that supports content creation, ILT training as well as gamification. Qstream would meet only one of those criteria. We may still use them again if we are unable to find a compete platform in future

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Qstream was easy for us to use and gain insights from. Feedback from sales leaders and reps was generally positive. Having greater flexibility about creating custom reports and streams would have increased the rating

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

As I mentioned before, I've used Adobe Captivate for a long time. I've used other authoring tools, but always come back to Adobe Captivate to do my heavy lifting. Perhaps, I'm just more comfortable with Adobe Captivate and always am surprised at what I can do with it. Camtasia works well with my video, but Adobe Captivate can do it all.

Qstream was selected by default because it was offered by Growthplay as their preferred gamification and adoption tool. We have subsequently looked at acquiring Qstream for other initiatives and are in the process of evaluating options

Return on Investment

  • Adobe Captivate has had a positive impact on our learning and employee development initiatives. People are always impressed at how professional our content looks and is received. The tool is definitely worth the investment.

  • Reps have adopted our new sales methodology quicker and with more rigour meaning we are more successful in the field.
  • We’ve been able to create scale to drive adoption. Without technologies like Qstream, we would never be able to meet our enablement and growth targets.
  • More reps talking a consistent message means our customer experience has improved at the sales front. This allows us to differentiate versus the competition and ensures we win more often.
