Ahrefs

Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

Linkody

For the explicit need of managing backlinks, Linkody is a good tool for this use. If you need additional search and website related verification tools, then another tool would be better, such as SEMRush or SpyFu.

Pros

  • Ahrefs has a fantastic link index - one of the largest of any of the tools I've used. It's also updated regularly, and picks up new links much faster than competitors.
  • The reports available in Site Explorer are built with SEO practitioners in mind - they're the exact reports I need to check the health of our campaigns and optimizations. It's an elegant dashboard.

  • The identification of new links is extremely helpful.
  • Comparison tool of backlinks and being able to look at competitors backlinks as well.

Cons

  • The fee only covers a single user license. Other tools (that cost less, at that) will allow multiple users. Right now the delta isn't high enough for me to switch, but if I had to consider a larger team we may give up the tool.

  • The tool is exclusively related to backlinks, so there are not any other features (which we are subscribed) to utilize on the platform.
  • There are periodic crawl errors, so we have occasions with reports filled with hundreds of backlink errors. Commonly these are corrected within a day, but we have to wait to act on the errors because there are so many it is difficult to identify what is a real error and which is a mistake of the Linkody tool.

Ahrefs recently became more expensive. While they offer a large web index of backlinks, some of the modules of analysis available in similar tools make them a better value in many respects. Ahrefs continues to update their interface, but the accuracy of link counts and new/lost data modules calls into question the validity of the provided information.

Usability

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Alternatives Considered

I like Ahrefs because its index of backlinks is fresher than SEMRush and the way of presenting information is a lot more convenient and versatile than Majestic. Also, I like the fact that it's mostly focused on SEO vs. the broader approach that SEMRush takes.

Linkody is more limited than SpyFu and SEMRush, as it is specifically related to backlinks management. On the other hand, if that is all you need and on you only have a handful of domains to manage, it is a relatively economical solution.

Return on Investment

  • ROI is definitely positive, as the price is relatively low for such a useful tool. It's hard to quantify the positive impact Ahrefs had on our projects, but it was definitely very helpful (in finding reasons for sudden drops in rankings and discovering new strategies by just looking at competitors using Ahrefs).

  • Linkody helped tremendously with disavowing uncredible links, which has helped to clean up our domain's reputation.
  • Linkody is a good, centralized way for us to identify changes and new links for competitors websites.
