Amazon RDS

Amazon RDS is well suited if you need a highly-available, cloud-hosted, scalable database for websites or web applications. It can grow to serve as many queries as you need (at a cost) and is easy to configure. That being said, RDS can get expensive quickly depending on your use. If you're hosting a simple website or blog, it would be cheaper to stand up a database inside the EC2 instance powering the application. If you're not working with a lot of data, RDS can potentially be overkill for your needs.

Oracle Database

The Oracle Database is very suitable for large-scale enterprise level applications, like maintaining a database for users of a particular electronic currency which interacts with credit card accounts and has a various number of functionalities like automatic transfer of money on a particular date and so on. This is obviously only one particular domain but in reality, it can be used in many other domains.Oracle can be used for much smaller level applications or information storage purposes as well, but it might just be an overkill due to the performance issues it has, for example, using Oracle where we only need a small number of tables with almost all static values is not efficient.

Pros

  • RDS received provisional FedRAMP-High Authorization in January of 2017. When our clients ask us how our data is encrypted and secured, we mention that it's encrypted at rest on Amazon RDS, and that (so far) has instantly established trust in every instance.
  • RDS makes everything easy - automatic backups, encryption at rest (above a certain service tier), ultra-fast upgrades, and excellent configurations for event hooks and logging.
  • RDS is impressively fast and available. Our RDS instance literally has never had a failure or problem of any kind.

  • Oracle Database has the full features of PL/SQL which means that we can completely unleash the power of stored procedures, triggers and other various complicated database functionalities.
  • Rollback to previous states is extremely simple.
  • I believe that the best property of the Oracle Database is that, it can used for simple database storage uses like storing an address book and can also be used for very complicated things like maintaining tax details of a million unique entities. The range of usage is very wide.

Cons

  • It's really hard to think of any areas for improvement. I think the console could maybe use a simpler interface or walkthrough for newer users who know what they want, but are unfamiliar with the technical terminology.
  • It would be great to be able to automatically spawn a lower-tier RDS instance for staging and development environments, mirroring the functionality of the higher-tier production environment but minimizing costs.
  • Because DynamoDB is not encrypted at rest (yet), it would be really nice to see more documentation about creating simple, semi-serverless applications with an RDS-Lambda-API Gateway setup.

  • Oracle is bit more expensive and difficult to setup initially though later it will be easy to maintain.
  • While we were upgrading from Oracle database 11g to 12c, few legacy stored procs stopped working.
  • Though Oracle DB has nice UI, compatible with the application, can manage data easily, but some of the features are not free.

The product is very good but when you need help it's very difficult. Oracle must have a database with all the customers' configuration so we don't lose a lot of time answering questions. We finally contract with a premium DBA to solve all our issues.

Once server has been provisioned we need to install Oracle software, create database, setup jobs, import data and setup replication. these are some of key tasks.

Alternatives Considered

Automated snap-shotting every 24 hours is, again something that I could just set up in minutes with a few clicks, though we also backup on cron jobs to elsewhere, and, because of our industry we have a HUGE "forensic logs" that initially live in the database but get archived off every seven days. (We literally log every single API call between our front-end and our application servers, and the data structures that the APIs return.

Oracle database is very efficient in storing data whereas Oracle API helps manage and develop APIs from the web, Android, and even IOS.Oracle database has a variety of options in terms of supporting other platforms, analysing data and also efficient as a data mining tool.Oracle is compatible with my OS and that's why I use it.

Return on Investment

  • Using AWS in general, and especially RDS, has made it extremely easy to gain the trust of enterprise-level clients who have significant security and privacy concerns.
  • The scalability and rapid upgrade process of RDS has freed my business from a lot of growing pains.
  • Thanks in part to RDS, our hosting costs account for under 1% of operating costs.

  • Using Oracle DB, retrieving the data was easier. Along with nice UI it was easy for connecting and communicating with the application.
  • It was easy to handle large amount of data where more data processing is required
  • The Oracle packages are well organized and can be easily accessible.
  • Initially during Oracle setup, we observed few hiccups while installing and maintenance. Lot of effort was required.
  • It is licensed under a proprietary license and most of the features are not free
