Amazon RDS

Amazon RDS is well suited if you need a highly-available, cloud-hosted, scalable database for websites or web applications. It can grow to serve as many queries as you need (at a cost) and is easy to configure. That being said, RDS can get expensive quickly depending on your use. If you're hosting a simple website or blog, it would be cheaper to stand up a database inside the EC2 instance powering the application. If you're not working with a lot of data, RDS can potentially be overkill for your needs.

Oracle Database

Oracle Database is well suited where we must store huge amounts of data and more processing is required and Oracle can be used if the backup and restore process is frequently done in an organization. Also, if a reliable and scalable data storage option is required for BI task, then Oracle is convenient to use. Oracle is useful where we can export the results in required format and share across team in lesser time.
Its less suited if users are less and for personal use. Also, if we are not working with absolutely massive datasets, and don't need the specific enterprise features or if the configuration isn't extremely complex, then Oracle database is not well suited.

  • Multiple availability zones for high assurance of uptime
  • Both hosted and local management/reporting utilities
  • Integration with CloudWatch and CloudFormation for automated creation and real-time performance metrics

  • Oracle packages have a nice way of bundling functionality like classes. Stored procedures and Functions are well organized.
  • Oracle database is very user friendly and performance has increased in the version 12c as compared to previous versions.
  • In Oracle database we can store huge amount of data without any issues and it is one of the best tool for working with relational databases
  • Backup and recovery process is simplified as compared to earlier versions of Oracle database

Cons

  • Unable to run custom software on RDS servers
  • Customer support is lackluster
  • Price

  • Oracle is bit more expensive and difficult to setup initially though later it will be easy to maintain.
  • While we were upgrading from Oracle database 11g to 12c, few legacy stored procs stopped working.
  • Though Oracle DB has nice UI, compatible with the application, can manage data easily, but some of the features are not free.

The product is very good but when you need help it's very difficult. Oracle must have a database with all the customers' configuration so we don't lose a lot of time answering questions. We finally contract with a premium DBA to solve all our issues.

Once server has been provisioned we need to install Oracle software, create database, setup jobs, import data and setup replication. these are some of key tasks.

Alternatives Considered

Honestly, there aren't a lot of great alternatives to RDS, and most likely the real alternative is just running an instance on your local box. While lots of other services (like Rackspace) offer hosted database solutions, RDS in my opinion, is the clear winner on price, availability, and failover support

The third-party solution that we chose (Dotmatics in this case) has developed the chemical cartridge only against Oracle. So there was no need for us to evaluate any other database alternatives.

Return on Investment

  • Using AWS in general, and especially RDS, has made it extremely easy to gain the trust of enterprise-level clients who have significant security and privacy concerns.
  • The scalability and rapid upgrade process of RDS has freed my business from a lot of growing pains.
  • Thanks in part to RDS, our hosting costs account for under 1% of operating costs.

  • Working with Oracle certified professionals in its use gives you greater visualization in the market. Offering Oracle Database opened doors for many more important clients and projects.
  • A good Oracle configuration in a project greatly reduces the reporting rate of data incidents or performance.
