Amazon Route 53

With Amazon Route 53, one can create and manage public DNS records. Using the easy to use and simple web interface it lets you get started in minutes. One can provide controlled access to the hosted zone by using the AWS IAM service. IAM can be used to control who in the team can create and make changes to your DNS records.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)

SolarWinds IPAM is well suited for requirements such as - Subnet Management, IP Management, IP Request requirements, DNS and DHCP Management. Since then API has evolved within SolarWinds and specially in IPAM module automation, things have become easy and that has increased the value of SolarWinds IPAM module. However few more changes would be required such pulling more information from DNS and DHCP server such as Gateway information, Host Mac Address and then integration with npm Discovery.

Pros

Amazon Route 53

  • Route53's UI is quite simple and can be understood and manipulated within minutes of introduction.
  • Route53 is globally scalable and customizable, allowing you to set intuitive fail overs and routing based on latency, location, random, or set policies.
  • With AWS-hosted infrastructure, Route53 allows for a special set of alias records with extended privileges to simplify your DNS solution.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)

  • With IPAM automated address scanning, we can be confident that we are looking at an up-to-date, accurate snapshot of our network.
  • The built-in alerts are a great safety net. We know that even if we aren't paying close attention to our IP address space, IPAM is. If a range is nearly full, IPAM lets us know before it becomes a real problem.
  • IPAM's event logging gives us insight into any and all changes made by our network engineers.

Cons

Amazon Route 53

  • Price, it is not expensive ... but you can find some cheaper and even free DNS solutions.
  • If you use non-AWS infrastructure, Route 53 doesn't have significant advantages on other services.
  • AWS Route 53 does not support forwarding or conditional forwarding options for domains used on an on-premise network.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)

  • The user experience is not as intuitive as other products. We have to be more restrictive around level 1 help desk access compared to NCM or NPM in SolarWinds.
  • Making and enforcing changes, not just monitoring, has been hit or miss in some instances.

We are heavily invested in SolarWinds. We currently own Network Performance Monitor, Netflow Traffic Analyzer, User Device Tracker, Server Application Monitor and Network Configuration Manager. We have NOC mode setup for deskside support for monitoring any down devices that may effect our network across the globe. This application gives us the information we need when we need it.

Amazon Route 53 is designed well, with individual domains easily configurable, and with the current state available at a glance. The UI does have scaling issues, but they are at scales most companies will not encounter. The tooling surrounding Route 53 in AWS is very good and makes use of Route 53 for many features.

Bring the interface into a more user friendly space.
Allow the user the ability to move root folders into other root folders. There are times when sites need to be combined into a new group and having to delete then re-add them is a huge pain. Make the popup screen for putting in information double the size so that you get everything in one window view rather than having to scroll.

The product is simple enough that the docs and the UI stand on their own. Its one of the least confusing (/most intuitive) AWS products. As with all Amazon products, don't expect strong email or human support-- you're going to be using their documentation. If you need a human to guide you through the DNS process, you should consider a tool like CloudFlare or NameCheap; if you're a developer, Route53 is where you want to be.

I have not contacted customer support and therefore have no experience in this area. I know we have some issues with our VAR support at this time for Orion, but I don't know if the IPAM falls into the same support structure. Perhaps others in the organization may know more regarding the support area.

Know the full scope of what you will be installing. Solarwinds can be a very complex installation. IPAM is just one fairly simplistic piece.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Route 53

GoDaddy is fine if you just want to have a domain and set up a few simple records. But if part of your business is transferring domains and constantly updating records for new websites, email changes, and security, then a registrar-based DNS service just won't cut it. Route 53 has the tools for an advanced user who wants more control to avoid pitfalls of transfer downtime.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)

SolarWinds is easier to configure than every other tool I have used including Infoblox. If you already use SolarWinds for monitoring IPAM, it can be bolted on and set up in minutes. Alerts are pre-configured and there are existing "canned" reports. I have yet to meet an IT user who has to either read the manual or take a training course to use it. It is simple, straightforward, and completely intuitive assuming you know what an IP address and subnet are.

Return on Investment

Amazon Route 53

  • Kept our domains running, no issues with downtime or affecting our end customers.
  • Enabled us to save time running static websites via routing a domain to an S3 Bucket.
  • With various time to live settings, we're able to make DNS changes and have them go live pretty quickly.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)

  • Super easy to track down a missing End point device.
  • IPAM has saved us hundreds of hours of tracking down devices and their location within our building and without it, we would probably be in trouble from our higher-ups.
  • IPAM provides such an easy to use interface that despite the up-front cost it is always worth the investment when trying to save time keeping track of all kinds of devices (Linux, Windows Server, Windows 10 Pro, etc.).
