Turbonomic

Large deployments (on-site and cloud) where resource utilization is hard to account for. VM Turbo can analyze what is happening in your datacenter and recommend or actually implement its suggestions for performance and resource management. It also claims to know about network and disk resources and how to put VMs in the proper resources to gain performance in network and disk. We didn't really try this, but is nice to know it has some ability to be aware of network and disk.If you have your datacenter resources under strict control, VMTurbo may not help all that much. Likewise, if your datacenter is fairly flat with no tiers of storage, compute, or network performance, or if there is simply more demand than can be met, than there is not much that VMTurbo can do. It can't create IO and CPU cycles out of thin air.

Turbonomic

  • SQL and Exchange analytics. Looking into these heavy workloads helps resolve performance issues and allows administrators to properly adjust thresholds and CPU/Memory settings to maximize their Virtual platforms.
  • Detailed recommendations. Having the details around what adjustments are needing to be made to a virtual machine is paramount in getting business owners to agree to the change. Without it - IT is merely bogged down in the sand.

  • Sometimes you can find undocumented bugs that can compromise the entire infrastructure.
  • [If] you don't have an official support channel, you have try to find out the source of the problem by yourself.
  • Volume size limitation. Other players allow you to create volumes up to 64TB while ACS allows only 2TB volumes

  • It would be nice if the UI included a break-down of features that are both licensed as well as un-licensed. That way, you could not only see what you have, but what you don't.
  • The right-sizing recommendations are great, but very little info is given about why the recommendation is being made. More info would not only increase understanding, but would also help drive decision-making.

The product just works so well and nothing has caught up to it. We expected VRealize to catch VMTurbo over the course of the last 18 months and that we would use this product as a stop gap until vmturbo was there. That was not the case and we have determined it still has more functionality and it does things easier.

I have found the product to be very easy to work with and manage. Upgrades are performed through the web interface. This includes downloading the new file and applying the upgrade to the appliance. Overall, the interface and the various tabs are self explanatory. This was purchased as a replacement for vCenter Operations manager and it proven to have not only more functionality, but is easier to use and manage. The other advantage is that it works with multiple hypervisors as well as storage vendors making it a definite plus over other solutions when you have a heterogeneous environment

There is value to be had in just doing a "click install" and then just evaluating and following recommendations. However, that is nowhere near the benefit you will get from the very powerful custom reporting if someone is willing to take the time to master this platform that can be somewhat demanding at that level.

The University, my first large implementation, had a big issue with 149 small data centers spread on São Paulo State, this data centers costs to university were very high, the consolidation idea in two data centers were awesome, but were worried with the management, so we adopted ACS to management of all 576 physical hosts. Now a days the university is delivering IaaS for all staff, students, teachers and researchers, they are using these resources to delivery services to their clients and have a great results in research area

We used to use Dell's Foglight solution. It was not reliable and had many issues keeping up with the changes within my virtual environment. Turbonomic not only keeps up with the changes but preemptively adjusts and makes changes on its own to alleviate resource strain. Definitely the best option we saw during our 'shopping around' phase for a solution.

  • Day two of having VMTurbo running, we were able to reduce our environment by removing 1/2 of the hosts in an existing cluster, whilst still accommodating more than N+2 redundancy (in the event of a failure while a host is down for maintenance)
