Apache Drill
if you're doing joins from hBASE, hdfs, cassandra and redis, then this works.Using it as a be all end all does not suit it. This is not your straight forward magic software that works for all scenarios. One needs to determine the use case to see if Apache Drill fits the needs. 3/4 of the time, usually it does.

DB2
DB2 is suitable for any use. The main one is certainly the creation of an online database that can be queried online through TP queries and through batch reports. It is necessary to take care of the database maintenance to allow maximum performance, for this, there are the utilities that help the system operators to do it.

Apache Drill
- queries multiple data sources with ease.
- supports sql, so non technical users who know sql, can run query sets
- 3rd party tools, like tableau, zoom data and looker were able to connect with no issues

DB2
- DB2 maintains itself very well. The Task Scheduler component of DB2 allows for statistics gathering and reorganization of indexes and tables without user interaction or without specific knowledge of cron or Windows Task Scheduler / Scheduled jobs.
- Its use of ASYNC, NEARSYNC, and SYNC HADR (High Availability Disaster Recovery ) models gives you a range of options for maintaining a very high uptime ratio. Failover from PRIMARY to SECONDARY becomes very easy with just a single command or windowed mouse click.
- Task Scheduler ( DB2 9.7 and earlier ) allows for jobs to be run within other jobs, and exit and error codes can define what other jobs are run. This allows for ease of maintenance without third party softwares.
- Tablespace usage and automatic storage help keep your data segmented while at rest, making partitioning easier.
- Ability to run commands via CLI (Command Line Interface) or via Control Center / Data Studio ( DB2 10.x+) makes administration a breeze.

Cons
Apache Drill
- deployment. Not as easy
- configuration isn't as straight forward, especially with the documentation
- Garbage collection could be improved upon

DB2
- IBM is really behind in delivering developer tools. They pride themselves on Data Studio, but it is just frustrating.
- Marketing. Horrible to do a Google search and get returns for a COMPLETELY different product, for z/os. Why they share the same name is beyond me. Better marketing would also increase the user base and help the product mature.
- Slower than the competition to roll out next-generation features.

if Presto comes up with more support (ie hbase, s3), then its strongly possible that we'll move from apache drill to prestoDB. However, Apache drill needs more configuration ease, especially when it comes to garbage collection tuning. If apache drill could support also sparkSQL and Flume, then it does change drill into being something more valuable than prestoDB

You have to be well versed in using the technology, not only from a GUI interface but from a command line interface to successfully use this software to its fullest.

DB2 for i is extremely stable. I've experienced system slowdowns and performance issues on badly configured systems or badly configured system accessing the DB but that's it, never had a problem caused purely by the software. Support is also pretty good.

The performances are exceptional if you take care to maintain the database. It is a very powerful tool and at the same time very easy to use. In our installation, we expect a DB machine on the mainframe with access to the database through ODBC connectors directly from branch servers, with fabulous end users experience.

Apache Drill
compared to presto, has more support than prestodb.Impala has limitations to what drill can supportapache phoenix only supports for hbase. no support for cassandra. Apache drill was chosen, because of the multiple data stores that it supports htat the other 3 do not support. Presto does not support hbase as of yet. Impala does not support query to cassandra

DB2
DB2 is a similar product that is most respected. Oracle might be supported in a broader context, but DB2 is superior on every platform where the choice is there. Licensing is also a factor in which DB2 is much better, which might offset any cost differences. DB2 support is also much better at all tiers.

It can grow as your company grows. It also plays well with Crystal Reports and other BI software once you create an ODBC connection for the DB. It can be managed with SQL management studio so no extra software is needed for that.

Apache Drill
- Configuration has taken some serious time out.
- Garbage collection tuning. is a constant hassle. time and effort applied to it, vs dedicating resources elsewhere.
- w/ sql support, reduces the need of devs to generate the resultset for analysts, when they can run queries themselves (if they know sql).

DB2
- Positive - Very good performance as compared to other traditional DBs.
- Positive - Transaction and query search are made easy from a DB level with good performance, also runs on top scape on AIX servers.
- Negative - There is always room for improvement, such as Webex queries and the GUI base tool. Also the available support documentation should be improved.
