Overall Satisfaction with Db2

DB2 runs the bulk of our company processes including inventory, accounting, manufacturing, order management, CRM, business intelligence, and data warehousing. It is the main database for nearly everything and is considered the source of record for most transactions. We also use it as the database for loading and cleansing data before interfacing with any other databases.
  • Index advising
  • Complex queries
  • Views
  • Reliability
  • Need easier way to make dynamic tables
  • Need better data cleansing commands built into the language
  • Need better way to see the impact of a field change across the database
  • higher database performance
  • reduced maintenance
  • simplified database development
  • solid upgrade path
I have seen DB2 work in very small environments with only a couple users. Then when the company grew the database grew with no problems at all. We just bought faster servers and upgraded the OS and everything just worked.

At one company, I saw that DB2 started with less than 200 users and over 20 years later that grew to thousands of users with no need to rebuild the database or re-architect anything. It is simply amazing.
I have never had DB2 go down unexpectedly. It just works solidly every day. When I look at the logs, sometimes DB2 has figured out there was a need to build an index. Instead of waiting for me to do it, the database automatically created the index for me.

At my current company, we have had zero issues for the past 8 years. We have upgrade the server 3 times and upgraded the OS each time and the only thing we saw was that DB2 got better and faster. It is simply amazing.
DB2 works as good as any of these databases. It is cheaper to run than any of them. It is more solid and stable that SQL server or Netezza. It is very comparable to Oracle for reliabilty.

But for administration, Netezza is a little simpler because it has no indexes. Netezza is also purpose built for data warehousing. It isn't a good transactional database for manufacturing. But administration is far simpler in DB2 that in Oracle or SQL server.

Do you think Db2 delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Db2's feature set?

Yes

Did Db2 live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Db2 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Db2 again?

Yes

DB2 is well suited for high transaction databases and high availability databases. It is an excellent on-premise solution that requires very little administration. I have used it in so many businesses including telecommunications, warehousing, manufacturing, distribution centers, energy utilities and others. I honestly haven't found an area where it didn't do the job needed.

The only area that it might have a weakness is large high-performance data warehouses. However, my understanding is that IBM is working to address this so that it can compete with Teradata and others.
