Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

WaveMaker Rapid

WaveMaker is really suited in places which require custom applications and where there are limited resources available. This really powerful platform can be integrated into any team or department because it is so easy to work with and the applications are really good.

Pros

  • Appian is great for sharing information across processes. The platform is designed such that objects from one application can be simply referenced in another (if your security permits it, of course.) This makes information sharing across processes quite simple from a technical implementation perspective.
  • Development cycles on Appian are shorter as compared to traditional methods. We're able to churn out solutions at a higher velocity.
  • Building a user interface is fast and simple. It has limited widgets but meets our needs 95% of the time out of the box.

  • WaveMaker has helped us create internal applications in very short amount of time at a very low cost.
  • The interface is really clean and it is easy to understand, you need not be an expert coder to work on WaveMaker.
  • You can download your developed application and deploy it on any server you wish. There is no lock in whatsoever.
  • The support team is super supportive and they are genuinely interested in solving your problems.
  • WaveMaker helps you develop web and hybrid applications simultaneously, so you will be saving a lot of time and effort.
  • WaveMaker is constantly upgrading and the team makes sure that they inform the users about the upgrades.

Cons

  • Advanced functionality requires use of the Appian expression language. The more advanced the logic, the harder it is to build with the expression language. This means development expertise is more relevant if you need advanced functionality, which I imagine applies almost all the time. I would much prefer if they allowed some common language such as JavaScript or Groovy out of the box.
  • Debugging has proved difficult.

  • There is absolutely nothing that can go wrong with the kind of price WaveMaker offers, their trial experience is great and their support is exceptional.
  • There is a learning curve involved and personally I do not feel that this is a negative because WaveMaker helps you to create business grade applications, but there will be users who might find it difficult to catch up on some features. However, with an exceptional support team these things can be managed.
  • WaveMaker has really good documentation but sometimes that becomes exhaustive because there are a lot of things that are covered.

We recently renewed our license with Appian. We are convinced that its flexibility, relative ease of use, the support they provide, there mobile advancements and their general willingness and desire to see us succeed all contributed to our reason to renew our agreement with Appian

Usability

Appian8.8
Based on 28 answers
Overall I would say Appian is pretty easy to use. The learning curve for building forms and simple processes is short. However, a significant benefit of Appian is its use of business logic. In this case the user will need a deep understanding of logic statements (If, Or, And, etc). Also, to better use the data then a designer should have a good understanding of setting relationships between data points, building DB views and SQL queries. To realize the full power of Appian it does take someone with some development experience a good 6-12 months to be a well-rounded developer/designer. Also, it will help if the person doing the designing has some information architecture, interaction design experience. Knowledge on how organize data, layout forms, establish design patterns, will make the use of the forms easier.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Return on Investment

  • I have seen Appian cut losses in time and resources attributed to mistakes in following procedures.
  • When Appian processes are created from well-defined requirements, the processes can save an organization much due to better throughput.
  • If Appian processes are constructed from requirements that are not well thought out, the processes can be resource consuming.

  • WaveMaker Rapid has helped us build internal applications really fast at a fraction of cost that has been quoted by one of our vendors.
  • As of now there is no negatives that we are facing with WaveMaker.
