Autodesk Inventor

Autodesk Inventor is a great tool for students and faculty for engineering areas that don't require great precision or development of more thorough scientific results. Is you are conducting research, or deal with very intricate and complex systems I would recommend a more robust platform that complies more to industry standards.

InVision

All in all it is a really good tool for creatives and marketers. It can be used to get in the weeds and do all of the work that needs to get done across all phases of the work, but also to share the work and solicit feedback across internal and external teams.

Pros

Autodesk Inventor

  • The program is very good at simplicity. Each of the buttons, menus, and options has an explanation of exactly what the feature does, and even a more advanced description if you desire to learn more about what each one does.
  • Autodesk Inventor is a very fast program. Everything renders extremely quickly and there are no delays when examining a 3D model, part, or assembly. This is especially useful when giving a presentation about a product or design, and you need to be able to show a concept to an audience in real time.
  • The software has an extremely accurate simulation feature that lets users do stress analysis on a 3D model. It can calculate precisely where the stress concentrations are going to be in a particular model and even give you an accurate depiction of where the part could likely fracture and/or fracture during loading.

InVision

  • Very easy to export Sketch files (where prototypes are actually created) into Invision and preserve the interactivity.
  • Additional interactivity can be added in InVision. Like scrolling with locked footer.
  • Clients, designer and developers can collaborate - leave notes and respond to notes made by others.

Cons

Autodesk Inventor

  • Inventor demonstrates a lack of fluidity in the process of transferring data between programs.
  • Inventor shows some lack of sophistication that certain features that are readily available in other design software packages are limited in use in Inventor.
  • Inventor can often have difficulty in creating models that show true color, as in blacks can come out as dark grays in certain renders, even when the material and appearance settings are the same from part to part.

InVision

  • Designs can be very slow to load on mobile devices, particularly when they include many screens.
  • There isn’t an offline version of the full app, which feels less-than-ideal for many of our teammates who live in areas with more spotty internet.
  • There are limited functionalities to portray animations and transitions. This hasn’t been a huge issue, but it makes the app feel a little out of date, considering the range of such functionalities in other apps.

Inventor continues to meet our enterprise needs. I don't see a need to change unless we change our business model significantly.

The interface is well designed, but I had a hard time figuring out how the various pieces of software integrate together.

Support Rating

Autodesk Inventor

Autodesk Inventor 8.0

I'm giving the overall support rating a 5 only because I rarely have to use it. Trying to find the answer on the help pages hardly ever helps me because any problem I have is usually too deep for what the help offers. Given the popularity of Autodesk, I have always been able to find an answer online after doing enough looking!

I didn't need to contact InVision support, as I've never needed it. They have an intuitive UI, and most of the questions are answered in their help portal or in tutorials online. Since many people use it, there a great resources available on for example YouTube. No problems so far with InVision.

Alternatives Considered

Autodesk Inventor

AutoCAD and Inventor are both made by Autodesk. We use AutoCAD for all of our electrical design work as well as our pneumatic design work. AutoCAD and Inventor can really compliment each other. Information can be shared between the two programs. It would be hard to do what we do without either of these software packages

InVision

InVision works seamlessly and easily when sharing and requesting comments from others. Other products I've used like Balsamiq and Dropbox (earlier versions) provided online displays of work, but no easy way to collect feedback or quickly update. InVision provides enterprise level options that allows everyone in our organization to be involved as needed without separate licenses and software downloads on individual machines.

Return on Investment

Autodesk Inventor

  • iLogic has enabled rapid design changes and model automation that save us time and money
  • Cross-platform compatibility with other Autodesk products (e.g., CFD) keeps us in a single ecosystem with a single software vendor.
  • Included data management tools save us from chasing files or components around and prevent data loss.

InVision

  • Definitely has streamlined the design process, allowing for quick extensive feedback from clients making the design portion of our projects so much faster and complete meaning less problems later.
  • The ability to make prototypes interactive really makes it easier for the client truly feel how things will work, allowing for less work later when a feature is decided to either be needed or not needed because the client didn't fully understand just from discussion.
  • Makes it easy to determine what parts are or aren't going to work as you better see a flow of a wireframe.
