AWS WAF

AWS WAF is highly appropriate to interrupt or prevent cyber attacks because when implementing rules, whether they are specific or centralized, so any application that has these vulnerabilities is protected.
Implementing managed rules creates greater security to protect both API and applications. If implemented along with other AWS tools, the security is much better, so if you want to protect applications against more specific attacks, it is ideal to integrate with Amazon CloudFront, which is a great benefit because it warns when thresholds are exceeded or specific attacks occur.AWS WAF is ideal to avoid common web attacks. For more specific attacks and scenarios, I don't recommend this.

BIG-IP

Again, protection of enterprise data via VPN solution can be easily achieved with BIG IP. Despite its shortcomings, it has been very reliable as I use it daily to acess the coporate websites and do my work. I can imagine getting frustrated if the connection is not stable . Thankfully, Big IP is a very stable VPN client.

BIG-IP

  • Easy connection: you can connect to your corporate network with two clicks.
  • IP restriction: F5 has a list of possible insecure IP numbers, if someone tries to connect using one of these numbers, F5 BIG-IP won't connect.
  • Always on feature: Very handy feature, if you install always on, you won't need to click connect.

Cons

AWS WAF

  • The documentation offered is somewhat confusing, so it would be ideal if it were much more direct and precise.
  • Your initial configuration may be confusing, so the best option is to use the rule templates provided by AWS.
  • Its configuration is not unified with AWS, so it must be done separately and it takes some time.
  • The number of rules to be established is somewhat limited.

BIG-IP

  • The appliance had power supply problems, replaced 2 over the 5 years, $3000 each
  • The appliance as a hardware device had no support 2 years after we bought them, moved to virtual
  • Requires F5 knowledge, their terminology and way of doing things needs training

The product is highly scalable. It is easy to configure the rules and thereby helps us to mitigate many vulnerabilities. The interface and programming of the firewall provisions were easy to setup. Amazon clearly spent a lot of time figuring this out and perfecting it. It allows users to do customized configurations based on their needs. It provides protection against a number of security issues like XSS, SQL injection, etc. I would definitely recommend this for protecting your infra as you scale, since this basically protects and filters all requests hitting your application server.

On the occasions when we've had to engage f5 support, they have been great. They have always resolved our issues quickly and been easy to work with and professional. The reason I give them a 10 out of 10, however, is because when we've had issues that have crossed over between the f5 BIG-IP, our Cisco switches, and our Microsoft IIS server the f5 support representatives have been extremely knowledgeable about every product and device involved and have been able to troubleshoot end-to-end without having to engage other vendors.

Alternatives Considered

AWS WAF

We evaluated Imperva, but we were more convinced with AWS WAF because of the better pricing model, ease of deployment as we were already using the AWS platform which helping in ease of integration. The technical support for AWS WAF seemed to be better as they had better understanding of the overall system and architecture of the product, which helped us in getting a problem solved that was encountered while using AWS WAF. The amount of documentation and helpful material available online for AWS WAF made it the first choice for us to select this product over Imperva.

I can't recall the name of the previous software we used for remote intranet access, but it was much less reliable. F5 BIG-IP is consistent and easy to use--the authentication process happens quickly and reliably via my cell phone's facial recognition feature which is convenient and secure. No need to carry a key fob or enter a verification code. The previous software required email codes be sent and entered to verify access.

Return on Investment

AWS WAF

  • Our applications are less exposed to cyber attacks, which prevents them from getting out of control and consume much more resources than they should.
  • Saved us money by preventing attacks.
  • The traffic control is much more bearable.
  • App development is safer.

BIG-IP

  • Load balancing is a requirement in most serious web environments, and this allows us to keep sites up and running in the event of partial server outages.
  • Keeping sites extra secured with the advanced security and routing features is a plus.
