BeyondTrust
It is an absolute must in all organizations where security is taken seriously. For organizations where there is a tendency among the users' end to abuse access privileges, this tool comes in handy. It has features that would enable the administrator to look through video logs to see what was done by a specific user. Also has the capability to terminate or lock users/ user sessions.

It is well suited especially for users that access or store sensitive/confidential data on their computers. In the case of where users are accessing confidential data over the network, it is highly recommended to use Bitlocker to encrypt the computer. In the case where users are storing confidential data on their computer, it should be a requirement that BitLocker is used/enabled. It would be less appropriate if someone was using a computer and they were not dealing with any sensitive data, or in cases where the computer is used for recreational purposes (browsing the web, playing games, etc).

It does exactly what it needs to. The only times I've had serious issues with rolling out to a vendor is when they have a "contractual agreement" to only use their solution. Almost every vendor that I've worked with and shown this product to has been skeptical for the first 5 minutes and fully converted to liking the ease of use of the product by 10 minutes

  • Encrypts the entire drive and provides a high level of security.
  • In an Active Directory environment, you can set up BitLocker to automatically save keys to AD.
  • As part of Windows, no additional licensing costs.
  • Set up and configuration is relatively easy.
  • Uses TPM module to increase security.

Cons
BeyondTrust
  • Better communication to customers on new release compatibility
  • Crowd-sourced rule logic for specific applications would be nice (I hear underway)
  • Technical support processes could be a bit improved

Microsoft
  • Even if it's the best we tested, I think write performance could be improved. Maybe with dedicated hardware inside the TPM?
  • No integration with OS password is a shame as most others have it and it is Microsoft on Microsoft so they can probably do it better then anyone else and safer.
  • I wish they would support multiple passwords like FileVault on macOS. If it's a shared computer, you have to give the only password to Bitlocker to both users.

  • Java based. Always an issue. I know they are working on this and it will be Javaless if we need it. I know that Java can cause issues across the board and I understand the need of it, but it does not make it any better when there are Java issues.
  • Stronger integration with the Active Directory. Currently its only read-only, which is good and bad.
  • I would love to see an App. I know they are working on this as well.

Usability
BeyondTrust
BeyondTrust Endpoint Privilege Management is really usable thanks to the Cloud platform that provide central management, analytics, updates and policy definitions. For policies, quickstart covers around 80% of the overall configuration and we just have to define home made applications and dedicated use cases. From the user perspective, messages can be customized so it's easy to understand for user and they have an endpoint application to follow workflows approval.

The employees at Securelink have always been responsive and seem to be invested in the success of my company. They truly understand what their product means to us so if there is a problem, they are always willing to help. In the rare event that something is found on their end, they will be proactive and reach out to someone to help and get something on calendar for a fix

In-Person Training
BeyondTrust
The in person training was great. Very informative and the trainer was great. I would highly recommend this option if you're hesitant. Any questions can then be directed to support. Support is great as well, and will definitely help answer any questions. I would definitely
recommend adding some type of training as it was very helpful for our
staff.

Alternatives Considered
BeyondTrust
BeyondTrust Endpoint Privilege Management has more features than CyberArk and more detailed options for configurations. BeyondTrust Endpoint Privilege Management is more focused on setting up access-related endpoints, which requires some fine tuning and understanding for use cases where a single endpoint has to be shared with multiple vendors. CyberArk's setup is more geared to users' accounts and then endpoint management under the user accounts.

BitLocker Drive Encryption solution offering is cheaper than the one that McAfee offers, it will help you with specific business concerns like "how many encrypted assets do I have?" it's easy to maintain, easy to deploy, and easy to track. It's best suited for companies that are not trying to go far away on the disk encryption matter

Return on Investment
BeyondTrust
  • We are able to securely monitor activity from vendors accessing our network.
  • This meets our cybersecurity objectives of securing our OT networks.
  • The benefits far outweigh the initial cost of the software.

Microsoft
  • The biggest positive impact it has on ROI is the cost savings, since there is no cost to using the software.
  • Since it's widely available to anyone with a Windows computer, and the program is built into the operating system, there is no need to really install anything. This helps to save time of the IT department having to do installs, and also keep track of licensing, etc.

SecureLink
  • I've found that Securelink allows me to get a vendor access to an application for support purposes much faster than a provisioned VPN account and the red tape around this. I can set up a vendor to access an application suite in a half hour and it will be more secure than regular provisioning.
  • The ROI is yet to be seen on this, but it certainly makes Compliance, Internal Audit, and Legal very happy, which helps everybody.
  • Internally, there is much more push back and it has been problematic. For a tech, to have to log in to a server and navigate to a system is considered cumbersome, when before all they had to do was open up Putty or RDP to a server to get in. The only way to combat this is to force them to use Securelink by removing rights. Near impossible for the domain admins.
