Blackbaud Tuition Management (formerly Smart Tuition)

Smart Tuition is a good platform for schools that want to incorporate the financial aid application process and billing together. Parent use is easy to navigate, and it reduces the time spent by school staff to manage accounts. In a school where the financial aid application process is not done by a third party, Smart Tuition may not be the option they are looking to implement.

Ellucian Banner

I can only provide scenarios for where Ellucian Banner is suited because I use it daily and it suits all our needs for the University I work for. The college I am housed in, we each have a hefty load of around 400-600 students; therefore, Ellucian Banner is gold in my book. We also use another program in adjacent to this program; however, the other program gets all of its information from Ellucian Banner. During advising, I can inform the students of various holds, midterm grades, missing admission requirements, etc. The ease of processing major changes and minors, I absolutely love in Ellucian Banner 9. I am unable to provide information where it is least appropriate. My opinion after work in two large Universities, I have found with Ellucian Banner 9 it is the easiest program to use. I was really worried about Ellucian Banner 9 update; however, I am sorry I doubted it.

Pros

Blackbaud Tuition Management (formerly Smart Tuition)

  • Customer service is very professional and helpful
  • Multiple options for making payments and setting up accounts

Ellucian Banner

  • I think it's great to use if you are tracking grades for certain classes, especially if you'd like to see how students do, comparing midterm to final grades. If you have the permissions, you can see both.
  • It's also good to track students individually. You can look up a certain semester, and see how they did in that particular time frame, but you can also see their cumulative gpa, or even look up their entire course history.

Cons

Blackbaud Tuition Management (formerly Smart Tuition)

  • I have been happy with Smart Tuition and have not had any issues.

Ellucian Banner

  • It still runs on COBOL: the code base is getting stale.
  • The company's web portal is based on stale software stack, with little visible development.
  • Updates are slow and often interlocked with seemingly-unrelated modules.
  • Print output formatting is nearly nonexistent, requiring use of an expensive post-processor.

I have been very pleased with Banner Student. It gives me all of the options I could have wanted. I'm sure there is another system which could be comparable. I just feel comfortable with the system. Going from Banner 8 to Banner 9 (Student) was just a bit of hurdle to get past but it's realitivly easy process to get accustomed to the new version

You definitely have to learn it before it becomes easy to use. It's better than it was, but it's still not entirely intuitive. You can't just look at it and play around to figure out how it works

Absolutely. I use Banner Student at all hours. The in-house tech group is there from 8-5 pm. I am able to use the system (VPN) at all hours of the day even on weekends. This is vital to myself being able to do my job being I may be encountered by a question on any day.

From my experience, I have never ran into a problem where the page didn't load or took a while to load. Our technical group does a fantastic job. Not to say if a student who doesn't have a good Wi Fi signal has never experienced this but from my standpoint the pages load quickly.

Our department generally does not contact the support center for Banner but the IT department does. That being said, in the seven years that I have been here, I have not once needed to contact the support center; we have had no glitches on Banner's side that needed to be addressed.

I felt like it was better because you had a live person right there to help if you ran into any issues. I appreciated that aspect of the training process. Other times I felt as if I didn't have any support and it was all on me. In this case, I felt as if I had the support right there.

I will leave this blank due to the fact that I wasn't employed at the time of implementation. I know tech support asked for everyone who uses it to run checks on the Banner Student 9 prior to going live. That's what we did when the Banner Student 9 went into effect

Alternatives Considered

Blackbaud Tuition Management (formerly Smart Tuition)

I use FACTS in my role at work, and my children's school uses Smart Tuition. I am more familiar with Smart Tuition as a parent, but it seems to be a good solution for the high school. Since we do the financial aid in-house at my school of employment, FACTS works better for us.

Ellucian Banner

Ellucian Banner is definitely a good product as it is able to serve several departments at once. However, newer programs are able to adapt a little easier to the coming generations and be a little more user-friendly. I was able to use Intacct for some time and I definitely found it to be much easier to learn and become proficient at as opposed to Banner.

We have a number of different offices (Departments) which rely on this product. We need it to serve a number of different people. I believe it does just that.

Ellucian Banner

  • Banner was already in place when I arrived at my current school, but the centrality of Banner and its constituent applications contained therein has been far more integrated into the common business practices of the various disparate offices and their charges on campus. A hodgepodge of software that incongruously fits together by force of will or lack of other options seemed to rule the day for most other schools I've worked at. It was often someone's job to migrate data manually from one area to another just to get everything to work.
  • I think Banner's limitations extend from its ubiquity, utility, and centrality. At this point, moving from Banner to an entirely different Student Information System would be like tearing out all of the water pipes in your house. We're an Ellucian school, and by hook or by crook, they're going to be a part of the student, faculty, and staff experience for some time.
  • from what I know about the previous system used, it was an outdated system, based on very old software. Updating to Banner over 10 years ago meant that the school was able to accomplish far more with far less. This is not unique to Banner, but it is something that Banner is responsible for in our instance.
