CircleCI

CircleCI is perfect for a CI/CD pipeline for an app using a standard build process. It'll take more work for a complex build process, but should still be up to the task unless you need a lot of integrations with other tools. If you have a big team and can spare someone to focus full time on just the CI/CD tools, maybe something like Jenkins is better, but if you're just looking to get your app built, tested, and delivered without a huge amount of effort, CircleCI is probably your preferred tool.

Octopus Deploy

Octopus Deploy is a well though [the] solution to the deployment orchestration problem. It is a reliable and robust solution that is relatively simple to understand. [Its] UI is friendly and easy to use, The support and documentation [are] excellent and the product seems to fit into any organization’s process very well and with less effort than other products in this space. I actually find it a pleasure to work with [every day] and I am glad to have it as an integral part of our process.

Pros

CircleCI

  • Multiple builds can be run at the same time in parallel.
  • The CircleCI web interface (UI/UX) is very easy to understand and use.
  • Easy Configuration to learn and use. Just a single configuration YAML file.
  • Many integrations. We use the GItHub, Slack, and DataDog integrations.

Octopus Deploy

  • Integrates well with various platforms
  • Allows customization of deployment process, manual deploys, and redeploys
  • Allows flexible deployment process definition and scripting

Cons

CircleCI

  • The "phases" their config file uses to separate out options seem very arbitrary and are not very helpful for organizing your config file
  • No way that I know of to configure which version of MongoDB you use. You have to write your own shell script to download and start MongoDB if you want a specific version.
  • Hard to access build artifacts in the UI

Octopus Deploy

  • I would like to see Octopus handle branches as a first class citizen better. It certainly has branch support, but it is not as smooth or as intuitive as I would like it to be. I would like it to be easier to pick the branch of a repo I want to deploy and where I want to deploy it.
  • I think Octopus could do more to help the management of Azure deployments. The ability to swap slots in Azure would be a welcome feature.
  • Some integration points with TeamCity could be improved. It's not easy to spot the version number/name of a build package in Octopus and track it against the version displayed in TeamCity. It's possible, but not at all easy.

CircleCI interface is awesome in that it is relatively modern and makes it clear exactly which parts of the engineering lifecycle you are in

Octopus Deploy has greatly helped us to improve our reliability and frequency of our deployments and given us the confidence to deploy much more often, with a direct benefit to customers. Cross-platform support and release to Cloud require more focus on the product side.

It's pretty snappy, even with using workflows with multiple steps and different docker images. I've seen builds take a long time if it's really involved, but from what I can tell, it's still at least on par if not faster than other build tools.

Octopus Deploy is a software that runs very effectively, is easy to use, does not require such a high learning curve, provides the necessary tools to carry out the functions it offers, making it a very flexible software, it also allows that can be configured according to the needs of the user and provides integrations with other very advantageous tools since they are carried out in a very favorable way.

CircleCI support is very strong. The strong community and culture around the product have created a lot of technical documentation around specific situations that make debugging issues very easy. Also, the new Orbs processes allows for open sourcing of simple, small application containers and makes supporting that code for other very easy.

Alternatives Considered

CircleCI

Circle was the first CI with simple setup, great documentation, and tight integration with GitHub. Using Jenkins was too much maintenance and overhead, TeamCity was limited in how we could customize it and run concurrent builds, TravisCI was not available for private repos when we switched.

Octopus Deploy

There aren't really any competitors in the land of ASP.NET. Deployment is too ad-hoc. Other tools exist that have massive downsides, like Web Deploy. Most aren't even supported anymore. You could argue that containers (Docker) are a competitor, but containers cannot be used for everything and solve a somewhat different problem. Octopus Deploy is even able to help with containers. To us, Octopus Deploy was really the only really polished solution.

Return on Investment

CircleCI

  • It has eased the burden of standardizing our testing and deployment, making onboarding new developers much faster, and having to fix deployment mistakes much less often.
  • It allows us to focus our process around the GitHub workflow, ignoring the details of whatever environment the thing we're working on is actually hosted in. This saves us time.

Octopus Deploy

  • Significantly reduced deployment errors, which significantly reduced downtime.
  • Made the time spend by DevOps teams more effective.
  • Reduced downtime through the management of password resets and certs.
