Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

If you were looking for a internet edge firewall and wanted to add the modern day "next gen" features than I would say the [Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services] would do the job. The packages Cisco offers with the hardware is pretty easy to understand and you can add the right feature sets to it. If you don't need next gen functions for basic NAT/PAT then it still would be a good firewall. If you wanted it for a data center to inspect traffic going from the LAN to the Data Center it would be a good fit. If you do not size these correctly you might quickly run out of performance or capacity when using the FirePOWER Services. The smaller 5506-X with Firepower really seems to struggle when adding FirePower with it. I would say you would be less likely to use it if your organization has more than 100 devices. You would need to move up to a 5508-X, 5512-X or larger units.

Fortinet Fortigate is a robust firewall and security device. Fortinet has devices geared for any situations, and for any sized company...from single computer small businesses to extremely large organizations with thousands of computers. Fortinet Fortigate is reasonably priced and contains the ability to have multiple functions embedded into a single device, making management that much simpler. Its robust feature set is top-notch and is on a level playing field with the largest names in the business, and in my view, because of the cost difference, wins hands down.

FortiGate

  • My favorite aspect of the Fortigate product is the ease of use. The GUI is very easy to get around. The products rules and configuration are easy to learn and apply. The informational tools are easy to look at and produce results that are intuitive and quick to assess.
  • Another great attribute of the FortiGate product was reasonable pricing for the product and then the ongoing support. Living in the SMB space with tight governmental budgets is a huge factor in all my decisions. When a company like Fortinet comes along and produces good products at very reasonable prices it is good for SMB companies like mine. Many vendors price their products in a fashion that is beyond consideration by SMBs like myself.
  • Support is always a big factor in consideration of any product for our organization. Fortinet support has been extremely good. They have provided an onsite engineer at no cost to help us design, implement and maintain new products when needed. The call support has also been excellent, with quick response times and knowledgeable technicians.

Cons

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

  • GUI to be HTML5 rather than needed JAVA and ASDM
  • In relation to Firewall power, the Management console is rather lacking support.
  • Better 10 gig support
  • Cost is high compared to comparative providers of firewalls.
  • Better DNS object support / there are a number of shortfalls
  • Layer 4-7 firewall features
  • Better threat defense options

  • Fortigate's SSL VPN client isn't available via MSI with an easy options for mass deployment and configuration out of the box. You need to have a Fortinet Developer Network license to create a custom deploy image.
  • Fortinet's after hours support is overseas and is adequate. Not stellar.

Ease of configuration, rich feature set and robust monitoring have made this product almost fun to use. I still consult the manual, but the intuitive design of the GUI makes most configuration tasks self explanatory. We deploy several different models, but the management is nearly identical across all of them, making it easy to keep on top of hundreds of devices

[Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services] is really powerful at looking at attacks from multiple points. The updates come from the Talos group which is constantly adding new threat updates to the devices. This does give me some peace of mind that we are being protected from the newest viruses. The users who sit behind the firewall have no had any issues with the ASA's performance for general connectivity. If an outside device tries to get in they are blocked without much of an issue. The internal users who sit behind the firewall have no noted any performance issues over the years. I think if you heavily use the firepower services on the box you can tax it pretty hard and that will affect performance. When using the interfaces of the firepower you can watch it struggle sometimes. ASDM doesn't seem to be affected by it as much but when using IDS/IPS you can see performance go down a bit. It's still usable but you can tell it was not designed to handle the most modern engines.

Cisco TAC support is as painful to deal with as most technical support situations. However, they do offer good online tools that prevent a phone call. When a replacement has been needed, Cisco has sent replacement equipment quickly and well within the service level agreement. Having your ducks in a row (registration, accounts) before you experience an issue can save you time.

We live in Turkey. Fortinet's Turkey office [dealt] constantly with us in our every problem or our experience. In addition, global support teams also supported every ticket we opened in every problem we encountered. They support innovative approaches and evaluate and offer solutions. In this context, they were very supportive of the problems we encountered in previous versions.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

I have some familiarity with other products in the firewall space, but I feel that Cisco offers the best ability to integrate all of our data sources together, being that the majority of the infrastructure is Cisco. That being said, Check Point, Fortinet, F5 and others offer strong competition to Cisco.

  • The upgrade from the previous firewalls increased the throughput available by over 100%.

  • (Positive) The network is secured.
  • (Positive) As an analyst, I have to convince C level executives regarding protection from threats, intrusion, and productivity of the network resources. And I am achieving all the segments with ease of access.
  • (Neutral) The unavailability of post-sale service requires improvements. But due to the vast community of users and excellent documentation of the product, hides the lack of post-sale service availability.
