Overall Satisfaction with Fortinet FortiGate

We're using the Fortinet FortiGate as our primary firewall. It handles multiple vdoms for internet traffic and voice. It is also used for VPN, SD-Wan, web reporting and filtering. At any time we have approximately 3,000 devices routing through this firewall. The firewall is reliable and relatively easy to use. Support can usually fix the problem in the first call.

Pros

  • Web interface is the same across all their products
  • Firmware updates are usually a breeze
  • Easy to configure
  • Strong product lineup

Cons

  • The CLI is much different than other firewalls I've used in the past
  • The dashboard for internet traffic could be improved
  • Menus can be a bit cumbersome to navigate through
  • We have 3,000 devices on the network at any given time, it never seems to saturate system resources
  • SD Wan is easy to set up, it was simple to set up guest traffic to use a different ISP
  • We were able to consolidate multiple piece of hardware into one box
The firewall runs very well, firmware updates are fairly quick but you must follow the upgrade path. Neglecting this step will cause a lot of pain. If you decide to go with Fortinet FortiGate switches and/or access points, they can be managed within the firewall which is great. We're also using the FortiAnalyzer which easily plugs into the firewall for any reporting you may require.

We reviewed many different vendors product offerings, we found the Fortinet FortiGate to best fit our needs. We upgraded from a previous firewall, the migration was a fairly easy process. We were also able to consolidate multiple firewalls into one unit using vdoms. It's been helpful to have one pain of glass, one support contract and easy to work with support. These firewalls are feature rich which is great, but the support contracts are expensive.
