Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Fortinet FortiGate to centralise our networks, provide secure web filtering and deliver a solid security fabric integrated remote access solution to our Staff and pupils. We needed a single solution to ensure all endpoints/users are audited and robust filtering is in place. Fortinet FortiGate enables us to do all of this and assists us in safguarding our pupils from harm.

Usability

The learning curve can be quite steep if you are not use to firewalls or proxy servers but the graphical user interface within Fortinet FortiGate itself has been designed to find and set configuration in an intuitive way. Options can be searched for, set and even undone in seconds. The CLI access is also availible for more advanced or automated configuration if needed.

Smoothwall UTM

One of the biggest advantages over competitors that Fortinet FortiGate leverages well is its remote virtual private networks options. Licensing is included with Fortinet FortiGate units at no extra cost. We find that the telemetry is easier to compile and most importantly communicate with non technical members of staff. The Fortinet FortiGate unit is also extremely stable for long periods of time without showing signs of needing a reboot.

Likelihood to Recommend

Fortinet FortiGate addressed an immediate security issue we had a few years ago. The device gave us a much clearer picture of the activities on our network and also more importantly, increased our awareness of threats from the internet as a whole. Fortinet FortiGate helps us to mitigate these threats with regular signature updates from Fortiguard labs, identifying certain characteristics which, once recognised by Fortinet FortiGate, can be harnessed to deploy powerful 'playbooks'.
