Remote and telework but not for onsite filtering.

Cisco Umbrella

Very easy to implement for guest users traffic management, not only from the content point of view but also on the security point of view. I would suggest to consider starting with the DNS protection layer first or consider Umbrella SIG solution if you have in mind to implement a complete DNS, HTTP and HTTPS traffic management solution.

Pros

Cisco CWS

  • Flexibility
  • Scalable
  • Ease of administration

Cisco Umbrella

  • Filters content at the DNS level. Makes it a little harder for the sneaky ones to make it through.
  • Since this is at the DNS level, using their DNS servers (as a forwarder to your local DNS) it is extremely fast. Transparent.
  • Always being updated. Not dependent on "definitions" or algorithms - a site is either blacklisted or whitelisted.
  • Easy to implement, apply, maintain

Cons

Cisco CWS

  • Intuitiveness of the UI
  • Real time reporting
  • Report detail

Cisco Umbrella

  • We've had issues with networks that the internal DNS name is the same as the external DNS name; it would be good if that could be improved
  • I have seen false-positives before that blocked certain websites that did not appear to be malicious; this was rare but did happen more than once
  • The layout of the admin panel seems a little bit like it's lacking and hard to find your way around; would be nice to see that improve

We had no complaints about this product and solution from a usability point of view. Our only issue was the overall cost of configuring and maintaining the system.

I have not needed any vendor support for Cisco Umbrella so I can't really comment, but I do see the links to phone support, FAQ, service status, etc. in the bottom left of the screen so it appears to be readily available.

CWS is on par with Forcepoint cloud web security. It offers flexibility and scalability.

OpenDNS has great bang for the buck. We also run SonicWALL web content filters for most all of our clients, they make a great pair. In the past we've run Websense enterprise (great product, but pricey and their cloud version was sluggish back a few years ago.)

Return on Investment

Cisco CWS

  • Increased security
  • Decrease in number of infections

Cisco Umbrella

  • Umbrella has allowed us to protect our network regardless of who's connecting and where they're going.
  • It's also allowed us to have some degree of control over where they're going, specifically to protect the network from sites which are known to have network-malicious content.
  • Perhaps the biggest negative impact is the occasional mis-filtering of sites and content, but since Umbrella lets us include a way for users to contact us, this is not a problem.
