Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)

Overall, management is not terrible if you have a stable network that is not overly complex. If you don't, this product will take considerable time to plan for an effective solution. I will say support is not very helpful, so if you need assistance after the initial sales rep assisted setup, good luck and be prepared to spend hours on the phone.

Cisco Routers

One major drawback of Cisco Routers is that it is quite expensive. It may not be the perfect budget friendly item for most small companies. However, it is highly accessible and reliable. Security concerns are next to nil so it is something one can rely on, without fearing frauds and security breeches.

Pros

Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)

  • Manage high-privilege access to communications equipment. It allows to be granular in the permissions, to have it integrated with the LDAP users and, most importantly, to audit what tasks each user performed.
  • Profile users and devices and assign privileges and access levels based on that combination. It greatly improves the user experience, since it does not depend on the network it is in, but on the access levels it has depending on the device. It also allows self-managed guest access with approval flow, which is essential for our business.
  • It has also allowed us to automate actions based on findings from StealWatch, Umbrella, AMP, etc.

Cisco Routers

  • Security. You can run VPN services on these routers along with core function of routing.
  • Rate limiting for DDOS or traffic on WAN links can help to prioritise the actual user traffic.
  • Routing. This is main feature of these devices and they do it really well.

Cons

Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)

  • Lot and lots of settings. if they could simplify the process or have a template that would make things easier.
  • No batch edit. Would be nice to change settings of multiple devices at a time.

Cisco Routers

  • Firmware improvements as the routers (at least the models I used) can sometimes crash while setting up.
  • In two RV042 that I had to configure and monitor, I had problems where they stopped working properly (crashes, loss of settings, bug). In another model, the VPN did not connect and only after a router restart did it work.
  • Three WAN options on RV line.

For us the solution is very easily useable on its own. Perhaps that has to do because we started using ISE in the 1.2 days and have seen it grow during the years. Policy creation, etc. is all very visible and thus easy to use. Deployment of multiple nodes is also incredibly easy and flexible. You can easily add or remove nodes as you wish.

Cisco support is second to none, both in terms of how you access support but also the knowledge of the individual support teams. If you focus on one technology and provide "manufacturer support" then you can rest assured that you are accessing Cisco's top individuals.I feel like this is a USP for Cisco support.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)

I haven't tried any other vendor when it comes to AAA. It seems that ISE was preceded by Cisco ACS. Cisco seems to be the front runner when it comes to this level of security and implementation. Why would you go to another vendor if you know Cisco is the vendor setting the bar?

Cisco Routers

I haven't used other routers in my career. We evaluated Palo Alto but quickly realized we needed to stay with Cisco, as they never gave us a reason to change. Palo Alto also was a much greater financial investment we were not willing to take, along with the learning curve to support their hardware.

Return on Investment

Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)

  • It certainly wasted a lot of SE resources.
  • It was a waste of budget and time of my people to try to get it running.

Cisco Routers

  • It has helped increase IT productivity by making network management easier
  • The yearly subscription fee is too expensive and isn't worth it
