Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Meraki MS

[Cisco Meraki MS is] best suited for companies with multiple sites that want visibility and switch management in one platform. The Meraki series is most likely a better fit for small to mid-size companies that are comfortable with a cloud first approach. IT departments that have a string desire to use advanced features and "get under the hood" may be unhappy with Meraki. Your only way to mange the switches it really through there cloud, the switches have a very debug centered local webpage. Companies also looking for 40/100 GBPs would have a wider model range in another vendor, Meraki also dos not support Fibre Channel. If departments also want to control updates on a certain version, Meraki may not be ideal, they do not let you get too far behind in firmware. They have in the last 6 years really kept adding so many new features and have a good value stream and have been increasing the product portfolio a lot.

Huawei Ethernet Switches

Huawei switches are ideal for cases where performance is not essential, for low traffic solutions and for equipment management. It is not recommended for situations of high performance and stress, immediate availability and high scalability. It is also not advisable to use them in solutions that involve hardware from other brands, the integration of Huawei with Cisco, for example, is very traumatic and the results were not optimal in my case.

Pros

Cisco Meraki MS

  • Meraki MS switches are wonderful at allowing a network admin to configure a VPN mesh network without having to have highly specialized knowledge. Unlike Cisco switches, there is no CLI, there is only a GUI, and Meraki support helps you set it up as you add nodes to your network.
  • Meraki MS switches are easy to deploy. Full stop.
  • They can work with any firewall or ASA but I would strongly recommend using the Meraki MX security appliance if you are going to use Meraki MS switches because they were made to work together.
  • They easily stack. It's all done for you in the Meraki cloud control panel.
  • They will get an address from your admin VLAN's DHCP scope and keep it. Even if you unplug it and move it, you will not have to worry about addressing it.
  • The GUI is online and you can reach it from anywhere, so as long as you have the credentials, you can manage the network from any device that has a browser.

Cons

Cisco Meraki MS

  • Firmware management could be a little [more] customer change management centric.
  • Some of the online portal could be more pop-out driven instead of navigating back and forth between pages and reloading the page to do simple things.
  • Instances where Meraki switches won't have cloud access for long periods of time make it difficult to be able to maintain switch code configuration.

Huawei Ethernet Switches

  • The cost of the hardware is acceptable but the licenses of use are expensive and in the end its price equals or exceeds the switch of other brands.
  • There are functionalities that should be available in the standard version and when they are trying to enable, Huawei support indicates that they have an additional cost which causes inconvenience and difficulties at the time of implementation
  • the performance of the equipment is inferior to those of other brands although it is decent.

Support Rating

Cisco Meraki MS

Cisco Meraki MS 9.4
Based on 26 answers
Meraki support is always helpful when we run into any issues. They have helped us through config and best practices in many cases as well. They have been one of the most effective support groups I have worked with. The only occasional downside is more unique to us. We use some Cisco Catalyst switches for data center management and other Layer 3 functions. When issues come up in the Data center that has both Cisco and Meraki, the two support groups tend to shift blame towards each other for a bit until we find the issue.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Meraki MS

Cisco Meraki MS Switches offers more features and better ROI than other switches in the market place. They are super fast, very stabile and easy to manage. Support is high quality and easy to access. They continue to improve and expand their offerings to allow the ROI to grow over time. The portal is easy to navigate and providss more features than almost any one really needs.

Huawei Ethernet Switches

While reviewing multiple manufacturers of switches, there are only so many differences when it comes to a "simple" device such a switch. Most competitors have similar features or have features we were not interested in. In the end, the UI of the Huawei switches, combined with the fair price of the devices, made us choose them.

Scalability

Cisco Meraki MS

Cisco Meraki MS 9.4

The scalability is one of the key features and is very ease to use and understand quickly. Additional modules can be added with ease without having to build configs and apply them manually as in a traditional cisco networking infrastructure. This makes it ideal for fast paced environment where requirements are often changing.

Return on Investment

Cisco Meraki MS

  • One critical business objective was a worry-free network. This is it!
  • Another business objective was to be able to manage my entire network from a single interface. Meraki delivers again! Not having to be in the building to monitor, manage and configure networking equipment is worth the weight of these devices in gold.
  • I wanted to be able to see everything that was happening on my network. Meraki enables that. I can see every device, what each is doing, set alerts for when individual ports go down or the device that is attached stops sending packets, etc. The visibility into my network's performance and security is unprecedented. I never knew what I was missing and I do not want to go back!

Huawei Ethernet Switches

  • For basic and standard functionalities is a viable and relatively cheap option.
  • It is not advisable to use it in high-profile projects, it is preferable to use Cisco switches.
