Cisco NX-OS

Cisco NX-OS is designed to run on data centre switches, and for me the key benefit is the ability to merge Ethernet and fire channel management into a single switch hence reducing cabling and management. However we don't require fibre channel at present so these are just being used for the fact they offer 10GbE on every port, which is still a useful feature in the data centre core.Given we don't use the fibre channel features, having to learn the difference in commands from iOS is a little frustrating at times.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

If you are an organization that isn't locked into the environment of other operating system makers, then RHEL should be your very next stop. Administration is getting advanced as time goes by which makes that comparable to the point and click that most admins are crutched by. Scripting has always been the go-to method of administering Linux systems and even Microsoft is starting to really get it in gear with their PowerShell features.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

  • Support for multiple shell environments. It supports most of the popular shell environments and lets you create shell scripts for your backend tasks.
  • It comes with nice out of the box features for OS level performance monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • RHEL has a great support forum. If you ever need technical help, the forum is extremely useful.

Cons

Cisco NX-OS

  • Stability of the software (in the early days).
  • Lacks some of the features of regular IOS.
  • The command syntax is sometimes just that little bit different from iOS, causing issues for automation, scripting, etc.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

  • While the command line installation runs well, the desktop GUI tends to be resource intensive at times
  • The GUI based install menu does not scale well at times resulting in some menu options spilling offscreen
  • By default a menu based network manager should be included, from my experience particularly with the minimal install, this was not the case resulting in me editing the configuration file directly. Additionally, network tools should also be installed by default.

We find RHEL to be a superior OS with stable operations and long life. It is also easier to use and fix then most other OS's.

NX-OS has many similarities with the traditional IOS which is quite beneficial when it comes to configuration and learning. As a native Linux system, there are a lot of tools and features that can be enabled for any use case.

RHEL has most of the features that are required by an ERP solution. If you need any additional packages, RHEL has a great repository and a very easy package installation/upgrade process.

Our switches running NX-OS have provided solid consistent throughput. We haven't had any issues with it not being able to handle what we threw at it. The latency is extremely low. It also has multiple management options that we hope to pursue in the future.

Cisco support never fails me. In terms of timely response, no one is on par with them. They really value the impact of having technical issues and potential business stoppage. Also, their support staff are well equipped with knowledge and skills and easily resolve the most common incidents. Most of the time, we can resolve an issue by just calling them once.

Red Hat support has really come a long way in the last 10 years, The general support is great, and the specialized product support teams are extremely knowledgeable about their specific products. Response time is good and you never need to escalate.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco NX-OS

We studied the solutions from both vendors but we went for Cisco because it's powerful out of the box and has great support. It's also easy to find knowledge and support communities, and we already had a relationship with Cisco.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

While many enterprise applications offer Windows Server support, I never really seriously considered it for our application, as Windows simply Blue Screens too often for serving a business critical application. Instead, I took a look at Red Hat's upstream distro, CentOS. Had my deployment case been different, I probably would have considered CentOS more strongly. However, I needed the confidence of having someone to call if we had issues in order to ensure uptime for our applications. In short, RHEL was the ideal choice.

Security is something I know Cisco take seriously and there are many security features across all their devices. I don't think features like zero-trust are enabled by default though, so it does require reading the relevant guide and applying commands that suit your environment which can mean the implementation is not always as robust as intended.

Return on Investment

Cisco NX-OS

  • It is serving the purpose from last few years.
  • Need to spend multiple manpower cycles to do the reload/code upgrades.
  • We need to request for downtime from the user to do the reload/code upgrades.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

  • Overall, RHEL has helped us achieve heights in performance management and handling a large crowd at once with its huge management capacities. It is highly reliable and if used with apt load balancers you will not require more than one backup server because the crash frequency is minimal.
  • No negative impacted has been faced as of now since using RHEL.
