TIBCO Software Inc.

One of the main benefits we have with TIBCO Data Virtualization is being able to have information available quickly by applying the information cache; this benefits us by reducing queries to databases and not affecting the performance of databases and servers. And the response times in the information query are really fast even with large volumes of information; this really optimizes the query of statistical reports in the company as well as the query of information when it is required from an application using OData services, really the option of having the information available in a virtualized way is wonderful.

  • Data management: being able to pull and manipulate massive amounts of data in real time makes analysis much easier
  • Availability of data connectors: we can connect to virtually any data source, including databases, APIs, flat files, and other web sources.
  • Caching: storing standard data pulls in memory means better performance when that data is used in other sources
  • seamless connection to spotfire means getting data into spotfire for analysis a breeze

Cons

Cloudera

  • Not fully Open Source, couple of components of the distributions are privately owned, meaning with public contributions are not welcome
  • Improvements to Cloudera manager can only be recommended. its very hard to get it done once recommended as the full control is with them.
  • Should make components more aligned to Open Source rather than making it closed sourced.
  • Custom Features of open source software tools supported only by Cloudera are tricky. Cant commit changes to tools like Hue.
  • Improvements to Cluster Management tool is required, which are already available to its competitors.

  • Performance of TDV Studio (its own IDE) is poor.
  • Performance of TDV repository database is rather poor for larger numbers of objects .(Note: We have approx. 9tsd objects introspected in TDV and approx. 20tsd objects generated in upper DV layers.)
  • Propagation of privileges to parent/child dependencies does not work when applying recursively on a folder. (It's a huge setback when working with large number of objects organized semantically into subfolders.)
  • Lack of command line client interface for scripting at the time of version 8.4 (I had to write my own CLI.)
  • TDV Studio does an absolutely horrible job with its own code editors when indentation is in place. Also, the editor is brutally slow and feature-poor.
  • Tracking privileges on the level of table/view columns causes occasional problems when regranting.
  • TDV's stored programs ("SQL scripts" in their own terminology) compiler leaves out many syntactic and semantic checks, making them hugely prone to run-time errors.
  • TDV Server's REST API is a very poor (in terms of features) and flawed cousin to its SOAP API (at the time of version 8.4).

      Likelihood to Renew

      Cloudera

Likely to renew the use in case the requirements for Cloudera remain valid. The rapid change in customer requirements and solutions that must be validated, integrated or tested changes. As the maturity of the solution increases, the requirements to renew use decrease. From a solution feature perspective by itself would probably grade 10.

      1. TIBCO Data Virtualization has great performance on traditional data sources like oracle, mssql, and hive, but for new data sources there is space for improvement like Odata 2. Transformation could be much easier in TIBCO Data Virtualization, but it's difficult to do it graphically 3. TIBCO Data Virtualization supports a cache mechanism to improve performance, so it gives an upper hand to the user 4. User management under TIBCO Data Virtualization is possible; we can put data masking according to user and user group

On a few occasions I have asked TIBCO technical support for help because I have adapted perfectly to their tools, but in those few that I have communicated with their technical team I have received personalized, attentive, responsible attention and I am always assisted by an expert staff the topic. A TIBCO technical support technician spent more than an hour helping me to solve a problem in the initial stage of implementation in my department and this is something that I always appreciate.

Other vendors have clearer, more visual implementation documentation. We also did not have our data architect and and server administrator available full-time for implementation. In the future, we will secure the necessary internal resources.
