D2iQ Mesosphere

Mesosphere is well suited for orchestrating workloads. It supports Docker as a container as well as support others. It is highly suitable for running resilient and auto recovering big data/application containers. Mesosphere has proven time and again to be production ready at a massive scale. It supports native single button/API call scale up and scale down and supports various deployment patterns like Blue-Green and others.

Foglight

Strengths [Foglight]
  • Monitoring, Alerting and Management of on-prem virtualization and physical servers
  • Historical trending and baselining are excellent and being able to compare a problem period against the same sets of data for a period when there was no issue is especially helpful as part of troubleshooting.
  • Ease of use for end users is appreciated
Weaknesses [of Foglight]
  • Creation and management of custom monitors is a developer level activity requiring Groovy skillset
  • Less useful for management of an environment where there is a large amount of custom implementations
  • Commitment to longevity of cartridges/packs for specific subsystems
  • Ability to create custom schedules/alerts/escalations is only available via a 3rd party product (from a former Quest developer) and is not particularly easy to manage/manipulate
  • Lack of API accessibility for external integrations to other analytics (splunk, etc.)

Cons

D2iQ Mesosphere

  • Setting up is a bit of a hassle, especially ZooKeeper state management and mesos and marathon quorum.
  • Occasionally, I observed some failures when deploying something onto Marathon. Logging or detailed error reporting can help.
  • Stale containers and inconsistent states resultant of the cluster failure are hard to solve and need a complete system restart to get it back to normal state.

Foglight

  • While the Linux agents mostly work out of the box with the remote node receiving the push, some newer Linux distributions may require some tweaking of the agent install script due to upstream software package changes.
  • The canned reports are adequate for high-level overviews but I would like to be able to further customize them to include specific information from the monitored nodes.
  • I wish there was an application to migrate the Foglight NMS application and database (which reside on the same server) to a new server or VM. They make you open a support case to accomplish that for which you need an active maintenance contract.

Alternatives Considered

D2iQ Mesosphere

I happen to like mesosphere because it integrates well with a Jenkins based workflow, Deis is a little more Heroku like and it's not clear how to fit that model into a continuous-integration process. Kubernetes has also been criticized for being complicated.

Foglight

We were previously using Oracle to monitor resources across servers and networks. In general, that product was alright but the Foglight alerts are far superior to Oracle. The business goal of using Foglight is really to minimize business interruption costs so the faster and more noticeable the alerts, the better the product is at solving our problems.

Return on Investment

D2iQ Mesosphere

  • I see mesosphere as having a positive impact overall on the industry trending Docker and containers in general.
  • Seeing how mesosphere helps and simplifies things for the developer and ops, it is definitely a game changer.
  • Native support of on demand scaling up and down as per the need is one of the best features.
