DBeaver

Great tool for developers to use to dive into their databases. Not so great if you are a die-hard Windows user with expectations of a SQL Management studio replacement. This is the less suited tool for people looking to just view and edit data. If you need to generate any scripts or import and export data, this is the tool to use.

dbForge Studio for SQL Server

It's good for if you need to: Edit and run queries in a new SQL document. Build queries in a visual designer. Run a large script without loading it into memory. Track changes of the production database. Create unit tests using a tSQLt framework. Source control database changes. Create database objects in a visual editor. Generate database scripts. It's not so good if you need to: Manage user permissions or debug queries.

Pros

DBeaver

  • Find the right driver automatically.
  • Export entity-relationship schemes.

dbForge Studio for SQL Server

  • dbForge Studio has a clear user interface to monitor SQL server performance. It allows me to kill large or possible inefficient SQL quickly so it doesn't impact the server too much.
  • I find the SQL editor to be more friendly to use than the competitors, which seems generic. I can preview tables while writing codes.

Cons

DBeaver

  • Sometimes it's clunky and slow.
  • One time it made changes to prod without me asking it to do anything.

dbForge Studio for SQL Server

  • Should be more compatible with SQL Management Studio. Integration would be good.
  • Sometimes crashes.

At the moment, from our company we have not had to try the DBeaver support service, so we cannot answer this question. We understand that the paid version will offer a much better service.

Alternatives Considered

DBeaver

MySQL workbench from MySQL only supports MySQL databases and it only provides basic functionality. On top of that, the user experience could be quite confusing for first-time users. SSMS from SQL server doesn't support inline editing nicely. The view for inline editing and view data is different, making it uncomfortable to use. All in all, DBeaver is the best tool when you manage a lot of databases with different types.

dbForge Studio for SQL Server

I did not make the decision to choose dbForge Studio for SQL Server. I personally like dbForge Studio because of my familiarity with the SQL server and the UI.
