It's great for tracking students and classes. You can see a student's entire course history, if you'd like, or you can look in by each semester and see how they did. At the same time, you can also view their cumulative GPA to keep that in mind. If you'd like more background on the student you can also look up some of their information: age, address, phone number, email, etc. So you can also use it to contact students, if need be

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions

Campus Solutions is a solid product. It is used successfully by large and small institutions across the world. A fair amount of customization should be expected, as the delivered functions just aren't flexible enough for specific needs sometimes. If an institution has the developer bandwidth to support some customization, then this is a great product. It offers a seemingly never ending supply of efficient functions, such as Activity Guides, which allow the institution to assign desired tasks to end users, such as updating their emergency contact information. Students could be assigned a registration hold until they have completed their tasks.

  • Banner does a good job creating snapshots of students' current, future, and career-based educational history. It applies coursework to pre-built educational audits to assist students in tracking progress toward a degree.
  • Banner is good at being up-to-date with policies for educational privacy, financial aid awards, and other areas of regulation on the industry of higher education.
  • Banner is highly collaborative. Changes made to a student's schedule that affect a student's full-time status will update the student's billing and financial aid eligibility in real-time.

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions

  • It is web based so one can access it from anywhere, even outside of the university's network. Providing a way for staff/faculty to easily access student records from anywhere in the world provided they have a reliable internet connection.
  • It is relatively easy to use for basic tasks like looking up a student's bio-data information especially if you are not working in custom bolt-on's configured and developed to work on top of Peoplesoft CS. Once users know how the system works they find it relatively easy to use with little to no issues.
  • All the different functions can be found on one easy-to-read menu and that the menu never changes. That's important for a tool that is used several times a day!
  • The system can be customized to meet the demands of your university. Each university can customize the tool so it better serves its community. Custom views can be created and different screens can be provided depending on the need of the particular department.
  • Security is high and all data is secure. We have it configured with our SSO, so we can control the people who have access to the system. Permissions and privileges can also be given to different modules in Peoplesoft CS so different users have access to different areas of the system and different information. This provides security to sensitive information that may not be intended for all PS users.

  • The most basic function of the software (inputting data and extracting data)is laborious at best in Banner. You must learn a special Banner-specific language to use the software. Most of the programmatic functionality of Banner was created in the early '90s and has not changed. Built-in reporting is virtually non-existent and wholly insufficient even for a small to medium sized school like ours. Ellucian must re-invent their product (banner) if they wish to survive the modern technological landscape.
  • Bugs and dysfunction around every corner in Banner's interface. Banner cannot keep up with the bugs in their own software and have developed problems into their product. For example, imagine your Bursar needs a report showing how much different students have paid in a given semester, in order to do this she must navigate through four different pages to find a specialized form each named a nonsensical code, type in the term code (this is the only value for which you are permitted to search), and wait up to 20 minutes while a poorly programmed back-end procedure looks at every student ever enrolled until it finds the students who meet the criteria (the only way to access this data); additionally, the screen that is used to run this function is not capable of showing a status for the job so the Bursar must call a database or system administrator to examine a log file on the server to determine the status of the job.

I have been very pleased with Banner Student. It gives me all of the options I could have wanted. I'm sure there is another system which could be comparable. I just feel comfortable with the system. Going from Banner 8 to Banner 9 (Student) was just a bit of hurdle to get past but it's realitivly easy process to get accustomed to the new version

Absolutely. I use Banner Student at all hours. The in-house tech group is there from 8-5 pm. I am able to use the system (VPN) at all hours of the day even on weekends. This is vital to myself being able to do my job being I may be encountered by a question on any day.

Performance

From my experience, I have never ran into a problem where the page didn't load or took a while to load. Our technical group does a fantastic job. Not to say if a student who doesn't have a good Wi Fi signal has never experienced this but from my standpoint the pages load quickly.

Our department generally does not contact the support center for Banner but the IT department does. That being said, in the seven years that I have been here, I have not once needed to contact the support center; we have had no glitches on Banner's side that needed to be addressed.

I felt like it was better because you had a live person right there to help if you ran into any issues. I appreciated that aspect of the training process. Other times I felt as if I didn't have any support and it was all on me. In this case, I felt as if I had the support right there.

I will leave this blank due to the fact that I wasn't employed at the time of implementation. I know tech support asked for everyone who uses it to run checks on the Banner Student 9 prior to going live. That's what we did when the Banner Student 9 went into effect

Being able to have the historical data, as I said I said before, is the huge Benefit that we have from using the system. All of the teams involved are well trained and no alternative has proven worth making the switch.

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions has been the software of choice between Jenzebar and Campus vue as the user interface is easier, students seem to understand their progress and the system better than the other two softwares I have used. I would recommend this as all things student related are in one portal area.

  • Definitely, both positive and negatively.
  • Positive would be the ease at which the student can access data and also the developers that use the data.
  • Negative - Upgrade frequency and poor documentation.
  • Overall, Banner Student is a good product and I would recommend it to another school.

  • Allows synergy with the LMS - auto generating courses, students and enrollments. This helps increase adoption of our LMS, and improves student outcomes in their courses.
  • Integrations with other systems are lacking. Unless you have access to a db view, it's difficult to get information out of the system. Web services could be really useful - and it may be that our institution just doesn't take advantage of those that exist. This leads to lack of innovation.
  • Students have a difficult time navigating the system, leading to friction that can decrease student satisfaction and worsen student outcomes.
