Foglight

Strengths [Foglight]
  • Monitoring, Alerting and Management of on-prem virtualization and physical servers
  • Historical trending and baselining are excellent and being able to compare a problem period against the same sets of data for a period when there was no issue is especially helpful as part of troubleshooting.
  • Ease of use for end users is appreciated
Weaknesses [of Foglight]
  • Creation and management of custom monitors is a developer level activity requiring Groovy skillset
  • Less useful for management of an environment where there is a large amount of custom implementations
  • Commitment to longevity of cartridges/packs for specific subsystems
  • Ability to create custom schedules/alerts/escalations is only available via a 3rd party product (from a former Quest developer) and is not particularly easy to manage/manipulate
  • Lack of API accessibility for external integrations to other analytics (splunk, etc.)

Icinga

Icinga is a world-class monitoring system. It can be used for most general monitoring situations. It is not a silver bullet, however, and there are instances where domain-specific monitoring systems are necessary. However, the output from those monitoring systems can be funneled into Icinga as a central monitoring and alerting system.

Cons

Foglight

  • While the Linux agents mostly work out of the box with the remote node receiving the push, some newer Linux distributions may require some tweaking of the agent install script due to upstream software package changes.
  • The canned reports are adequate for high-level overviews but I would like to be able to further customize them to include specific information from the monitored nodes.
  • I wish there was an application to migrate the Foglight NMS application and database (which reside on the same server) to a new server or VM. They make you open a support case to accomplish that for which you need an active maintenance contract.

Icinga

  • High learning curve, setting up Icinga from scratch can be a bit of a challenge starting out.
  • If the io2db process fails you UI stops updating, which can be very frustrating.
  • There is no simple mechanism for adding new hosts and services through the web UI, it's all very config-file based.

Icinga 9.0

Icinga is a solid solution which does everything it promises. It is backwards compatible with most Nagios instances, making the transition very easy. Once you get the hang of installing new plugins and editing configuration files expanding its monitoring capabilities are easy.

Alternatives Considered

Foglight

We were previously using Oracle to monitor resources across servers and networks. In general, that product was alright but the Foglight alerts are far superior to Oracle. The business goal of using Foglight is really to minimize business interruption costs so the faster and more noticeable the alerts, the better the product is at solving our problems.

Icinga

Icinga is better than Nagios because of its nicer user interface. New Relic can monitor CPU/memory and disk usage, but it's more of a performance and application troubleshooting tool rather than monitoring

  • Manageability of incidents
