    Strengths [Foglight]
    • Monitoring, Alerting and Management of on-prem virtualization and physical servers
    • Historical trending and baselining are excellent and being able to compare a problem period against the same sets of data for a period when there was no issue is especially helpful as part of troubleshooting.
    • Ease of use for end users is appreciated
    Weaknesses [of Foglight]
    • Creation and management of custom monitors is a developer level activity requiring Groovy skillset
    • Less useful for management of an environment where there is a large amount of custom implementations
    • Commitment to longevity of cartridges/packs for specific subsystems
    • Ability to create custom schedules/alerts/escalations is only available via a 3rd party product (from a former Quest developer) and is not particularly easy to manage/manipulate
    • Lack of API accessibility for external integrations to other analytics (splunk, etc.)

    Pingman Tools

It's a great diagnostic tool. It isn't really this useful in our company for continuous monitoring because we don't have a giant network infrastructure but it sure is handy at times. It wasn't that hard to learn how to use PingPlotter and I believe it saved us a lot of time during troubleshooting. The price is alright compared to alternatives and I believe that it was a really great purchase for our company. It isn't appropriate if your network infrastructure is really small or limited just because you will find yourself missing out on a lot of features that you're paying for but not actually using. They are alternatives with fewer features for cheaper. For our company, PingPlotter is definitely a great tool.

    Pros

    Quest Software

    • Foglight NMS is very light on resources given the amount of monitoring connectivity options it provides. It is one of the few that I've trialed in the past that offers SNMP v3 connections.
    • The dashboard is concise with the main areas of interest. It can be customized as well if you have a particular use case.
    • Setting up alerts is straightforward with the ability to set custom thresholds. Alert emails get sent by configuring a primary mail server with the option to add a backup mail server in the event of a primary mail server outage or connectivity issues.

    Cons

    Quest Software

    • GUI interface is difficult to navigate
    • No APM capabilities. They left this space about a year ago
    • We have had issues with the GUI response times. On a regular basis, the interface can take several minutes to refresh

    Pingman Tools

    • Graphical highlight for Latency is limited to just one section of the GUI
    • Share report could include more than just a screenshot (i.e. drill down interactive)
    • Knowledge Base could use more videos versus just text articles

I have not had much contact with the PingPlotter support, only one time have I went to them and it was a positive experience. The questions I had were answered quickly and professionally. I have no issue with the experience I had with the Support team. This was from before and after the purchase of the product.

We were previously using Oracle to monitor resources across servers and networks. In general, that product was alright but the Foglight alerts are far superior to Oracle. The business goal of using Foglight is really to minimize business interruption costs so the faster and more noticeable the alerts, the better the product is at solving our problems.

      Pingman Tools

A balance of a generic tool vs a network equipment product is necessary when investigating network incidents or disruptions. Need to train the engineer to use both tools to perform their analysis and to dive down to the issues as fast as they can. Experience with the tools will continue to play a part if we were to adopt PingPlotter
