Likelihood to Recommend

FortiGate

Learning from our experience using a couple of different SMB firewall devices, the FortiGate firewall is well suited to our 500 or so user environment. The model recommended to us by the Fortinet engineers has performed well and seems more than adequate for current usage and future growth. Unlike other firewalls we have used, we are able to break open and inspect SSL traffic with this device and also replaced a separate web filtering device we were using. We are looking to add more of these to further segment internal networks.

MikroTik Routers and Switches

MikroTik is suited for large companies that require advanced distributions in terms of contracted bandwidth, and in the same way, allows a single device to specify filtering and firewall rules without acquiring an additional device. There is a range for small companies which is more economical and less robust, but in case it's not necessary, such a strict control over the data consumption of the company is not a feasible solution.

Pros

FortiGate

  • Simple but complete GUI allows for easy management.
  • Intuitive CLI allows experienced CLI users from other platforms to come up to speed quickly.
  • Unit comes out of the box with a feature rich logging capability, FortiAnalyzer brings it to the next level and is very easy to install.
  • Licensing is easy to understand, The device is a single line item and support has 2 options 8x5 and 24x7.

  • When you are creating a firewall filter rule on a router, the amount of options you have is incredible. For example, most other firewalls or routers will not give you the option to select a connection state, a packet size, specify the packet content etc.
  • You can use the routers in transparent mode, when your router is placed in front of a customer firewall or customer router, allowing only the allocated public IP address to communicate with the Internet and allowing you to allocate a certain bandwidth or speed.
  • The lowest end model routers have the same operating system, features as the more expensive ones making simple for us to test configuration on cheap equipment before commit to buy the more expensive one. The licensing model is very simple as well and easy to understand.
  • The cheapest routers also come with one SFP port, which is great as it is allowing us to connect fiber straight into it. No extra PoE injectors and converter are needed, reducing the number of points of failure.

Cons

FortiGate

  • Non-disruptive upgrades on standalone boxes. Not sure if the technology would allow it but it would be great to have.
  • Subscription signatures auto-deployment could affect production traffic. In some circumstances letting Fortigate accept subscription signatures may cause the device to drop traffic

  • Not every aspect of functionality is well described and that would be a point for improvement.
  • There could be a tool for firewall testing.
  • Open VPN should be more intuitive.

Fortinet's products have kept improving with new software releases and they continue to deliver great value. Their support is also very good. I believe that as a small enterprise, their products have given us competitive advantage delivering features and functionality that enable us to innovate and do things better. They also continue to be a leader in the markets they serve.

Ease of configuration, rich feature set and robust monitoring have made this product almost fun to use. I still consult the manual, but the intuitive design of the GUI makes most configuration tasks self explanatory. We deploy several different models, but the management is nearly identical across all of them, making it easy to keep on top of hundreds of devices

The first support level is pretty much useless for any complicated problems. They are they to guide you to the correct documentation relating to simple questions and to collect data for the 2nd level and up.Once you are able to get escalated, those people are pretty knowledgeable and will normally get you at least a workaround but most of the time they will really try to understand what you want to accomplish and not only apply the solution but also educate you which is less and less common and a really good thing.

Alternatives Considered

FortiGate

(Towards Sophos Cyberoam) The VPN throughput is not effective. The device has not any third party certification for the capacity parameters. Wireless controller feature does not exist. No security fabric concept. (Towards Sonicwall) With compare to FortiGate, VPN throughput is not impressive. No security fabric concept. Management is quite tough with compare to FortiGate.

Despite having a high cost, the possibility of using a low-end equipment with the operating system RouterOS to support the management of the MikroTik allowed this to prevail as an option like most of the solutions offered in the market, in addition to the possibilities presented for the support and the community information of the same they play important factors in the implementation and the taking of decisions.

Return on Investment

FortiGate

  • The sales team recommended the wrong product for us initially. It was unable to keep up with the traffic load at our location, even with everything disabled. They resolved the issue by finding the appropriate device for us and giving us a steep discount due to the previous issues.
  • Since switching to the appropriate hardware we have had an increased in availability. No longer experiencing outages or slowdowns due to insufficient equipment,
