Graylog

If you already have a basic understanding of Elasticsearch and/or MongoDB, Graylog will be a great fit when it comes to log aggregation. It will be a decent option even if you don't have any experience but have the time and willingness to roll up your sleeves that learning those tools will require. Graylog supports plugins to extend functionality for things like SNMP traps, telemetry collection, and solar flares. As is the case with most software with plugins, if the core functionality for which you are looking (i.e. not logging) is based on a plugin, Graylog probably isn't for you. The majority of the plugins in the marketplace are developed by third-parties looking to solve their specific use case so bug fixes and new features are not a given.

If I need to change a logo design on the invoice, the new logo is slightly larger or smaller so the type below the logo is in a different area than before. In this case, you would need to load the new version of the document into APM Plus and redo the mapping of the field areas to properly grab the information needed to process the document. Without doing this, the document could fail or go to the wrong archive based on the fields.

From a product perspective, it's an 8.
I am still unhappy with the pricing model for the enterprise. Graylog competes against the likes of IBM and Splunk, but your still the new kid on the block. To price Graylog enterprise at 50k for 20GB ingest an unrealistic data. It would require multiple facets of Graylog to be stood up and only forward pruned logs to the paid version.

Submitting a ticket to Stackify Retrace support team is very easy and the response is always within a few hours. In case of some serious problems they are able to provide assistance coming directly from one of their developers what decreases significantly the amount of time needed to figure out what is causing the issue.

Alternatives Considered

Graylog

Graylog provides some great functionality for free. There are some more premium products that would handle more logs and would be a little easier to configure

APM Plus does a better job of archiving documents than DocSend and makes it easier to find the documents when you need them. DocSend seemed to be more of a marketing tool than a business tool. APM Plus is all business and consistently does what you need on a daily basis. We selected APM Plus because of the great support on setup and after implementation. They are always ready to help.

Return on Investment

Graylog

  • We do not purchase support, so the only operational cost is that of the time it takes to maintain it.
  • All the components of Graylog that we use are free and open source, so there was no capital expense other than that of servers (repurposed from another recently-decommissioned project).
  • If there is a software crash that doesn't recover gracefully, it's usually something obscure that will take a while to diagnose and fix. Unless you build out a distributed and more resilient system with no single points of failure, that may have an impact on the organization or industry requirements for compliance.

  • We shorten the time we fix app issues
  • We spend a lot less time digging through data
  • We can be proactive and see issues as they are trending before the completely explode
  • I have APM on all production servers so I can catch issues as they happen
  • I no longer get 2000 email on an issue but rather one full of data
