HCL BigFix vs. Jamf Protect

HCL BigFix is well-suited:

1. Patch Management for Diverse Devices: HCL BigFix is ideal for organizations with a diverse range of devices, including laptops, desktops, cloud, virtual machines, and mobile devices. Its endpoint management functionality enables seamless patching across various operating systems such as Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, and Linux.
2. Comprehensive Patch Management: With HCL BigFix, organizations can achieve comprehensive patch management across their IT infrastructures. It ensures that all endpoints, regardless of the operating system, receive timely and secure patches, reducing vulnerabilities and enhancing overall security.
3. Troubleshooting and Monitoring: HCL BigFix excels in providing a dashboard that effectively displays problematic and functional machines. This feature allows IT teams to quickly identify and address issues, improving overall troubleshooting efficiency.
   However, there are some scenarios where HCL BigFix may be less appropriate or areas for improvement: 1. Coverage Expansion: It is important for HCL BigFix to continue expanding its coverage to include all possible resources installed within the IT infrastructure. Ensuring comprehensive coverage can enhance its effectiveness. 2.On-Site and OS Upgrades: Optimizing the process of on-site and operating system upgrades can help streamline the deployment process further. If the environment is predominantly Apple based then Jamf Protect is a strong solution for providing EDR capabilities to endpoints. The detection capabilities are up to par with other leading EDR tools and it integrates well with Jamf MDM. Additionally, the compliance, telemetry, log forwarding, and USB device management being included as part of Jamf Protect provide good ROI.

• Low resource use Protected Agent - stops tampering with agent and is not a resource hog
• Managed and custom Analytics - along with the out of the box Analytics provided by JAMF, admins can also set up their own to focus on areas of concern eg NISTcompliance items
• Vendor support - support is very responsive and knowledgeable

• The patching function is difficult for RedHat Linux servers, and can be improved.
• The site configuration and access control appears to be cumbersome.

• Jamf scoping can be a but of a pain sometimes
• For none security specialists it can be a little hard to navigate the portal
• It can be hard at times to understand the alerts and what is causing them

Jamf Protect is easy to manage. It is a separate interface from Jamf MDM which is nice for Security Operations teams. It allows Security teams to manage only the Security aspects without having to dig through all of the MDM configurations. For exception uses cases, Jamf Protect does provide options to customize settings where needed.

We have significantly enhanced our ability to patch desktops, including laptops, desktop, cloud, virtual machines and other mobile devices used by end-users. BigFix's endpoint management functionality allows us to seamlessly patch a wide range of operating systems, such as Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, and Linux systems, ensuring comprehensive patch management across IT infrastructures. We have established a track record of delivering secure and hassle-free patching solutions to our clients

In some aspects, Jamf Protect was far superior to the others mentioned above. The only downside I can see is that it is only macOS which could be a problem for hybrid environments.
