This is more suited to well-established organizations where they want to go cloud-native. With the advent of the importance of cloud, IKS has a place where existing customers would like to move to a more modernized, distributed platform with the trust and security of IBM along with the option to be deployed to a bare metal instance—currently some vendors lack.

I can very easily see Salesforce being a valuable tool for more complex and longer sales cycles. If you're interacting with multiple contacts, departments, and tiers within a company this will give you the organization and powerful analytics you need. If you are working with the same contacts and accounts for long periods of time (sales cycles of several months or more) it might also be a good fit. Be ready to invest heavily is implementation and training from the very beginning. It is a complex tool that requires A LOT of thoughtful, careful, and thorough planning to be implemented successfully. It is not well suited to industries that change rapidly, where your contacts might be completely different today than they were last week or the business you were working with has closed. It does not make sense for a company who's sales goals rely very much on the volume of contract value. You will simply spend too much time on data entry that will, in the end, be unreliable.

Pros

IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service

  • IBM has a strong focus on serverless and Kubernetes. This shows in the platform. Deploying containers to Kubernetes was very easy.
  • Deploying a Kubernetes cluster through the GUI is very easy and quick. On top of that, IBM Cloud offers a single node cluster for Free.
  • Container Registry is a very good product for managing container images. Integration with Kubernetes was seemless.
  • Portability. To transition from Google Cloud Kubernetes to IBM Cloud Kubernetes took almost no effort. We mostly use the CLI and the standard tools such as kubectl were present.

  • Reports and dashboards - I can build my own reports very easily to see upcoming renewals, first-year clients and so on. Then, I can create my own custom dashboard to track my favorite reports.
  • Opportunities and quotes - when I first started here we didn't use Opportunities for tracking renewals and upgrades. Now, it's easy to see what I'm working on and when ready I just add the products to a quote and it sends it to our billing for really fast invoice creation. It used to take me hours to do this and now it's seconds.
  • I love using activities - it keeps me organized and up to date on all my accounts that I manage. Plus, I can create future tasks so I don't forget to reach out.
  • I can send mass emails to any group of clients and I can create nice email templates with "placeholders" which allow me to use the first name of the main point of contact across hundreds of organizations. Again, this saves me lots of time.

Cons

IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service

  • I was on a bad wifi signal and lost connection a couple of times. The process of reconnecting was inconsistent and I sometimes lost my environment variable definitions
  • Error messages were sometimes not descriptive. I tried performing a kubectl command and got a strange error that was essentially the result of not having the KUBECONFIG environment variable set due to the error above

  • It can be a bit buggy at times, like randomly not letting you save or making you refresh the page or do the same action, and then it will save.
  • Bugs really are the main issue here. Otherwise it's great with reporting!

Kubernetes is absolutely fantastic. The Kubernetes API is a great tool when it comes to automating a deployment pipeline. Deployments are not only more reliable, but also much faster, because we’re no longer dealing with VMs. Our builds and deployments have become more reliable because it’s easier to test and ship containers.

This builds off a number of things I have already mentioned. This question completely depends on the competence of the developer. This makes the user friendliness of the UI 50/50. However if you have the ability I would say it is quite UI friendly.

The self-guided support was solid, and there are plenty of online videos to guide first time users, but I think one area of improvement is a faster way to transfer a large quantity of files from our local machine to the cloud for storage (Aspera)

Salesforce's support is top-notch. They have subject-matter experts that are accessible at all times to address needs as they come up. They let you know in advance when there are system updates and enhancements so that you are prepared for upcoming changes. I've never had an issue that wasn't addressed immediately when reaching out for support.

Ease of use. Very intuitive. We have been looking for a product that allows us to orchestrate our docker containers in a way where it allows us to effectively scale our applications to production. It also provides us a way of monitoring all our infrastructure in a very clear concise way.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service

Internally, we have evaluated and used Google Kubernetes Engine, Azure Kubernetes, and AWS Kubernetes. Overall, our team would rank IBM's offering as 2nd or 3rd amongst those we have used and deployed thus far. We selected IBM Kubernetes here because the client has almost all of their assets with IBM. K8 is better than Cloud Foundry for many things. The scaling is much better than running things on lots of EC2 instances.

Salesforce is the premeire product. Period. The others are cheaper and less capable, they may fulfill your organisation's needs but you will always be looking at Salesforce with wishful eyes. If you are a company that needs to bootstrap then spend the time to evaluate your options. If you are a growing company with plenty of funding it is best to provide your sales team with the best platform you can afford because switching out CRM's is second in complexity to swapping out an ERP.

IBM's CKS does not offers automatic autoscaling nor vertical scaling (automatic). Other services like Google Kubernetes Engine scales up and down very well

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service

  • Very cost effective and horizontally scalable serivces.
  • More predictable than spinning up new virtual servers for expansion (Charged by API).
  • Adaptation of all standards including Docker, MongoDB, Node-RED, allows leveraging of existing and Open Source code more reliably to reduce costs.

Salesforce Lightning Platform (formerly Salesforce App Cloud)

  • ROI - It allows us to handle billing and see if the client is being charged the correct amount so our books stay balanced.
  • Communication - It allows for all of our workers to see the notes of previous representatives so that no one is in the dark when re-engaging.
  • A negative would be that it is difficult to merge marketing initiatives, so unless someone uploads the Excel sheet of leads into the system (which is easier said than done) there could be duplications of effort.
