Considered Both Products
Intermapper
Chose Intermapper
We have been using Intermapper for years and have been satisfied with it to the point that we haven't looked at competitors. The maintenance cost is very low and the product does exactly what we expect and need it to do. The product has gone through a couple owner transitions …
Chose Intermapper
Intermapper is a cross between WhatsUp Gold and Nagios. Whatsup gold being for a less technical end-user and Nagios doing more than just SNMP scans and up down monitoring.
Chose Intermapper
We felt, with both pricing and level of complexity, that Intermapper was the right solution. We looked at WhatsUpGold, but the price was too high for us at the time. We looked at Nagios, which is free, but we didn't find it intuitive.
Chose Intermapper
I selected Intermapper because it was so easy to customize the display to exactly what we wanted. I wanted something that changed colors based on availability and something that we could display on TV's for our NOC. This fit all the criteria perfectly.
Chose Intermapper
I have 15 years invested in Intermapper, so my inertia to keep from changing is relatively high, and the cost to do so would be higher than just renewing the license each year. Traditionally though, Intermapper requires less work to get going, and less work to implement a given …
Chose Intermapper
Some of these other packages have some very sophisticated capabilities that Intermapper lacks. The problem is, not too many IT departments have the bandwidth to set them up properly and us the sophisticated features and maintain them. So why not get something that does what you …
Chose Intermapper
We used to use What's up Gold for our network monitoring but Intermapper seems to have better mapping capabilities. We used to use Ciscoworks for monitoring our routers and switches but it was limited to just those network devices and was a pain to set up and manage. We …
Chose Intermapper
InterMapper offers a cheaper and easier network map over SolarWinds Orion Network Atlas. It lacks SolarWinds graphs, reports and statistics. For monitoring, alerting and at a glance information, InterMapper is hard to beat for the price.
Observium
Chose Observium
Observium provides a free version and free trial, while others provide a free trial only. Live online training and documentation are available for observing, while others do not have these. It provides bandwidth monitoring, baseline management, resources management, server …
Chose Observium
SolarWinds does when Observium can do but for a much larger price tag. That is what the decision came down to.
Chose Observium
Observium is easier to use and "prettier" than most of the other open source tools out there. It's also significantly cheaper than most of the mid-range NMS products out there, and several orders of magnitude cheaper than the big boys. It tends to be my go-to NMS for these …
Chose Observium
I haven't used other products that are similar to Observium. Observium is an open tool, with a robust feature set. There are elements of comparable monitoring across other tools, but nothing I've seen that is a complete parallel in terms of feature set and visualizations. If I …

If you've never mapped your network out before, download a demo of Intermapper and let it run. Your jaw will drop as your network grows before your eyes. If you have your network already mapped, you still would like InterMapper because it will find stuff you did not even know you have. If I were a network consultant, the first thing I would do when I hit a client's site is to start a scan with Intermapper. You will very quickly learn what the topography is.

It is a very good overall monitoring solution for any kind of SNMP network device. Fast and simple to set up. It is an easy, robust, and quick monitoring system. The easy-to-use user interface provides advanced capabilities for the statistical display of data, as well as diagrams. This is a great way to add auto-discovery and geographical representation of the network.

Pros
  • Provides SNMP and WMI probe data.
  • Alerts us in advance of issues.
  • Allows us to customize notifications for different groups of individuals in the district.

  • You can see the bits per second that are happening on the ports, which is fantastic.
  • Between logical interfaces, you can see how much bandwidth is being used per second/minute/hour.
  • You can infer power consumption and conflicting routes. Great tool to aggregate and visualize your distributed network.

Cons
  • I don't have many complaints with Intermapper. It's a pretty simple tool for what we use it for, and it has worked well for us.

  • The documentation needs help. This product, like many other IT products, likes to skip the "101" stuff, assuming that you just inherently know how to do something, and the documentation is just for reference.
  • I have not been able to rely on the alerting engine as our primary way of knowing if devices are up or down. I'm sure that's just as much my fault as the software, but this is one area where commercial products tend to shine in comparison.
  • The autodiscovery of VMware virtual machines does not work properly if the ESX-level name of the VM doesn't match the VM's hostname. FileServer234 will be discovered, but "Server234 - File and Print" will not.

Support Rating
The product works well and is very easy to maintain. As such, we haven't had many occasions to use support. When we have called them they were easy to contact and responsive to our questions. We have had the product for years and it may have been a year or better since the last time we contacted them.

It's open source. Your mileage may vary. Sometimes the provided documentation is beyond frustrating, other times it's right on the mark.

Observium is easier to use and "prettier" than most of the other open source tools out there. It's also significantly cheaper than most of the mid-range NMS products out there, and several orders of magnitude cheaper than the big boys. It tends to be my go-to NMS for these reasons, even when budget isn't a huge concern.

Return on Investment
  • Allowed us to find issues we had no idea were happening with our network hardware in closets.
  • Able to pull network hardware inventory easily.

  • Allows us to react immediately when issues occur
  • Paying for enterprise support is relatively cheap and we have found benefit from it
  • Lots of time spent customising the product has been challenging
