memoQ
Chose memoQ
I believe memoQ is the best of these 3 tools. It has soo much functionality. I wish I could use it for all my projects, but we have a lot of clients that want to use either Memsource or SDL Trados Studio. As for the Web Editor, our translators seem to prefer Memsource over …
Chose memoQ
I like MemoQ because there is a good amount of choices of service and engineering support. Memsource accepts lots of different file types as a source file. Like Memsource and Trados, you can install different connectors to your CMS and process your files smoothly. I would …
Chose memoQ
We are using memoQ for only certain projects and it’s not our main tool. It’s relatively slow and sometimes it can get too complicated. It does the job in the end but we prefer Memsource because of its easy-to-use interface as time is very important for us as project managers.
Trados Studio
Chose Trados Studio
I tried using memoQ to get used to server-based localization tools, but experienced critical issues such as translation data not being updated on the server so stopped using it before I get used to it, unfortunately. It must be updated and improved by now, so I might try using …
Chose Trados Studio
memoQ is better quality and cheaper. Previously, Trados had a monopoly on the market but fortunately there are other adequate options available now at a lower cost.
Chose Trados Studio
It is not our main CAT tool but having an SDL Trados Studio license is really handy as we receive new requests as Trados project packages regularly. It is not as efficient as Memsource for example but it is a great option and has many features.

memoQ
I believe memoQ is the best CAT tool of all the ones I have tested. As a PM, it has a lot of file filters that are highly customizable. You can even use cascading filters to add extra filter settings to the default file filter. Also, the use of REGEX is almost available everywhere in memoQ. You can use regex for filenames, regex for tagging items in files, regex when importing items, regex when exporting translations, regex for QA checking, regex for filtering, etc. They also added a regex library so you can save your favorite regex and easily reuse them. From a translator's point of view, the LiveDocs functionality is something that no other CAT tool has (to my knowledge). With LiveDocs you can just add any type of document, and if it has selectable text, memoQ will search this text as if it were a TM while translating. Even for non-bilingual documents, this is really helpful as you can sometimes need to reference other materials while translating.

SDL Trados Studio is extremely well suited for expert CAT tool users. More novice users will have trouble getting up to speed. I have an office full of employees that constantly ask questions on how to do specific tasks, mainly because the task sequence is not obvious and is only uncovered by rote repetition of the same things. If you learn and apply the same techniques repeatedly, it becomes easier, but it seems the software was designed by software people, sometimes with little thought to the end users who have to figure it out. I don't know that professional training should be so necessary.

  • Preview feature
  • Accessing server-based TM often takes time.
  • When connecting to server-based TM, I need to enter credentials twice every time. The first attempt always fails.

Again, the list of functions is impressive but the way it is organized (not process-driven) and the fact that complex tasks should be close to basic tasks make the product suitable to hardcore users that have a lot of time to research the manuals and blogs. By the way, Nora Diaz is one of the most respectable users of this product. Her videos help a lot!

We rarely had any issues with SDL safe for a few bugs that we fixed promptly in the upcoming service packs and updates.

Return on Investment
memoQ
  • Able to handle projects with difficult files that we would otherwise need to edit before translating.
  • Locking/tagging segments and strings with regex to reduce translation volume/cost.

  • Trados is used by many clients, so it helps me to get more jobs.
  • Having one of the latest versions helps me a lot. I can, for example, import editable pdf documents and work on them within the Trados environment.
  • It also helps me with files which need to be returned in bilingual format in Word.
