Microsoft
Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps is well suited when working with other Microsoft Applications. For example, if you are working with Microsoft Office 365 it works very well when implementing CASB features. It works when implementing monitoring or blocks on Sanctioned applications however customizing the message to users is not that great.

Splunk User Behavior Analytics application is necessary when any company wants to capture the threat based on user behavior instead of just counting the number of occurrences of particular event. With Splunk UBA, we can analyse number of anomalies captured and which in turn creating threats which are nearly true positive.

Sumo Logic
SumoLogic is a fantastic log aggregator and analysis tool, a fine alternative to Splunk. Searching is powerful and mostly intuitive and results come fast. If you have application logs in clusters or Kubernetes pods that lose their logs every time they're restarted, Sumo is the solution for you

Pros
Microsoft
  • The integration to Microsoft Entra ID is seamless, which allows Conditional Access to redirect the session to Microsoft Defender for Cloud App for it to take actions (Block or Monitor).
  • Tracker users' activity is very good when troubleshooting or running an investigate.
  • Detecting risky users through tight integration with Microsoft Entra ID is a very good feature.
  • Detecting mass downloads and blocking the download of files from non-manage company devices is a very good feature as well.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot for any system errors.
  • Get the insights on application data sets and do some predictive analysis.

Sumo Logic
  • Sumo Logic allowed for our InfoSec team to ingest logs from our CDN directly, in real-time, instead of massive compressed archives that were sent every two-hours (the only alternative at the time). Sumo Logic had an app for these logs, that allowed us to easily get an immediate payoff from the data, with canned dashboard and saved searches.
  • Sumo Logic has a fairly extensive REST API when it comes to log sources, source configurations, dashboard data, searches, etc. Their wiki for the API is usually kept up to date.
  • Sumo Logic, during the period of time I had used their product, had added the ability to configure agents via configuration files. This allowed customers to configure their endpoints, and modify the endpoints, with configuration management tools like Chef / Puppet / Salt. Beforehand, the only option was to always make changes either via the web portal or REST API.
  • The solutions engineers were extremely helpful, and easily reachable when issues would occur.
  • Users at our company found it easy to get started, working on new dashboards, scheduled searches, and alerting. The alerting worked well with our third-party paging tool.

Cons
Microsoft
  • It takes some time to scan and apply the policies when there is some sensitive information.
  • After it applies the policies, it works, but there is a delay.
  • It doesn't provide any way to scan Microsoft Teams when an external exchange of images is happening. You can always do the filtering on the documents during the chat, but if there is an image, then some kind of OCR capability is required to detect it. At present, there is no way [Microsoft Cloud App Security] can go and detect those kinds of images and alert us

  • Performance-wise, it can be improved. Queries take a long time.
  • Dataset exploration - More data visualization charts can be added.

  • I like the help center, but I think if it had more GUI tools, it could help new users.
  • Pulling out data is sometimes hard to read, (Maybe if I knew how to export data better, this would not be an issue for me).
  • I would like better know-how on how to create reports that will help our business.

Usability
Microsoft
The interface is pretty simple and easy to use; however, you will need to do a lot of investigative research on your own to get comfortable with it. Originally, many of the Microsoft security tools had their own seperate consoles. Overtime, they have blended into one interface which is the ideal state. In some cases it is clear Microsoft had to pick which console a certain feature or setting was going to reside in and this leads to some confusion. For example, DLP is managed through Defender for Cloud Apps but you will also need to jump into Purview. For things like reverse proxy on your M365 tenant, you will need to go into Azure and setup conditional access rules. Not a big problem and I can understand why the settings are located where they are but for someone just starting out with Defender for Cloud Apps, it will take some time to figure out.

Sumo Logic
Sumo Logic is very powerful but definitely requires some configuration work to get the most out of it. You can get a certification related to this, but it is definitely not something you can just throw together.

I have not utilized actual support but the Sales and Product teams have been super helpful in moving our implementation forward and showing us the best practices.

I would give this rating because I attended a free Sumo Logic training at a WeWork in Chicago. I found the training very useful, and I learned a lot of features that I was not aware of before I went to the training. I like the idea that SumoLogic provides free training seminars. I am certified in level1, and I plan on certifying to level2.

Sumo Logic
I was satisfied with the implementation, as at the time, it was the best way to implement the product with the available feature sets in Sumo Logic. User creation and management became more of an issue during continued use, instead of it being an issue related to deploying the product in our environment.

Alternatives Considered
Microsoft
More flexible and more features with easy integration with cloud services like Microsoft Azure and other cloud services. Overall both gives similar features but we prefer Microsoft cloud app security due to its high threat detection rate. mostly we have been able to stop the threat in very very less time.

Easier we were using Splunk Enterprise on heavy forwarder on which all the add-on were installed and were using Splunk Cloud with respect to search head and indexers stack. And with Splunk Enterprise Security premium app, we were relying on correlation rules which were throwing more number of false positive but after implementing Splunk UBA, we are now getting real-time true positive threat or incidents.

Sumo Logic
Sumo Logic works very well out of the gate. For a small business it has given us what we need. I worked at a larger company previously, and we produced so many logs we had to create a custom logging service to handle them all. Cost and availability are big issues when deciding between the different services, whether self maintained and hosted, or provided by another company.

Sumo Logic
  • I can't think of any negative side effects other than it being SO slow sometimes, but compared to Splunk everything is slow
  • It's SO much cheaper than Splunk that the time it takes to query information is well worth it
  • In the times that we've had Sumo go down or stop logging information, we've found that we'd be absolutely lost without Sumo
