Microsoft Exchange

If you require on premises mail as we do there are few alternatives to Exchange in a business environment. Tight integration with Outlook makes training users fairly easy as Outlook is the de-facto leading mail client. Most businesses need an on premises SMTP server, and this fits the bill.
Where Exchange would be less appropriate would be a new company without a significant investment in on premises infrastructure and Active Directory. Using cloud based messaging would most likely be the best path forward for them, and the most forward looking.

Trend Micro Deep Security for the Hybrid Cloud

Hypervisor based agentless security this product excels at. It provides thorough protection for your VM's. The web filtering product that comes with it also does a great job filtering out malicious websites from being accessed by users with a very user friendly prompt that they are going to a website which has been found to be malicious. This is particularly useful when it comes to VDI.

Pros

Microsoft Exchange

  • Seamless integration with MS Outlook, client for Windows and Mac, Mobile devices and Web access.
  • Incorporates calendar, email, contact list and tasks within the software. All information is kept in the mailbox database on the Exchange servers.
  • High availability. The clustering that MS uses for Exchange has come a long way. Their Database Availability Group technology keeps a copy of the database(s) on each host within the cluster. We have not experienced an outage since implementing Exchange 2010, over 6 years ago. We are now running Exchange 2016 without issues.

Cons

Microsoft Exchange

  • Permissions for users on other calendars (Specifically Delegates) could stand to be improved quite a bit. Permission via Delegation, Full-Access on account or things like Send-As should be more easily available within the Exchange management console rather than a combination of using the console and using PowerShell scripts.
  • Mail discovery could also use an overhaul of its current process. While it does work, the limitations are difficult work around and sometimes it’s as though only have of the management done is via a GUI versus having to script a lot of the work needed.
  • The online version for Exchange O365 could also use an overhaul of how it works. There are too many related components that would seem to go together that reside in completely different locations. And again the reliance of scripting can be troublesome for someone that is not an extremely experienced administrator.

Trend Micro Deep Security for the Hybrid Cloud

  • Trend Micro has very little room for improvement. I am using version 9.6 at this time and it is extremely reliable. Some of the upgrades were not completely intuitive, but in those cases Deep Security support came through with documentation that covered all the bases.

Because it is the only option I feel comfortable using. It is aesthetically pleasing, inexpensive, user-friendly, and the list goes on. I have never used anything like it, and I truly don't think I will. Kudos to the Microsoft team for making a product that I feel proud to recommend to anyone!

Trend Micro's support is pretty decent, we have had issues in the past and they have been fairly responsive to us and our complaints. Depending on how severe the issue was. Any ticket that had a high priority was handled very shortly especially when we contacted our account rep even if it was after hours, we were still able to get support within a short time period.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Exchange

Since both products are built on the same technology there shouldn't be a huge difference in features and functionality. However, Microsoft is putting more time and money into O365 and I can't blame them since it's a constant revenue stream. Although I have had good experience with Exchange from 2007-2013 I can feel which way the winds are blowing. Most businesses and organizations will be better served by O365 these days. The finance department likes the set monthly cost of this service, even if it tends to be higher than running your own setup. There's also the ability to completely divest from local server infrastructure and management. There's still a limited use case for Exchange but that group is becoming smaller by the day

Trend Micro Deep Security for the Hybrid Cloud

We selected trend micro to take the AV scans and filtering out of the hands of the Windows and Linux vm's we have deployed and move it to the hypervisor level. This has led us to be able to deploy only a single DSVA per host and can protect all VM"s that are on that hosts. This has allowed for more time being spent on other priority security tasks.

Return on Investment

Microsoft Exchange

  • We have achieved 99% uptime for email services using Exchange 2016. By using a Database Availability Group (DAG), email is highly available and partnered with a load balancing solution, you can even run maintenance during production hours.
  • Exchange makes it possible to work from anywhere by using Outlook On The Web (OWA) or Outlook Anywhere by providing external access to email. While on the go, Exchange provides email connectivity to devices and phones, so you never miss that important email.
  • Exchange provides an excellent return on investment by providing "always on" email services with the benefit of being able to run on cheap storage - this allows for giant mailboxes allowing users to keep emails forever.

Trend Micro Deep Security for the Hybrid Cloud

  • 100% positive ROI. Without Deep Security we would have to leverage and endpoint protection management solution like Sophos or SEPM (Symantec). Although both are good products, from a cost perspective it would have hit us much harder. Trend Micro Deep Security scales very nicely.
  • Since Deep Security actually has zero (or at least unnoticeable) resource footprint on monitored VMs, it is a huge cost benefit for us. As previously mentioned, actual antivirus clients installed on each virtual machine (VM) would have significantly affected performance. This would have cost us much more additionally in paying for additional resources to allocate over VMs in the VMware environment. Deep Security is almost completely unintrusive from a resource perspective.
  • Also, from a layered security perspective, it helps us meet our goals; and since the price of Trend Micro Deep Security quite reasonable, it is that much easier to get approval for this specific internal layer of security.
