If an organization is all Windows-based Active Directory systems, then System Center Endpoint Protection is worth deploying and using. If it's a hybrid of operating systems, then an alternative solution is best.

Trend Micro
With around 80 users and 150 devices (including 6 server instances), this solution served us very well, with instant admin notifications and scheduled overall reports. Detection appears extremely reliable, and the memory and CPU footprint of the service seemed less intrusive than Panda, which we had issues running on Terminal Services instances, as it seems to hog excessive memory allocation. Rollout was smooth and we never had an instance of a corrupt installation.

Pros
Microsoft
  • It is easy to use and configure. This is a benefit, not just for the IT/Admin team, but also for the end-user, as they can easily set how and when to run scans.
  • It is good a identifying threats and removing these threats. When looking for a product such as this, it is important to really look at these two areas to really see how the software will work in a real-world environment. SCEP is one such product that does really well at both of these things.

  • Central Control Manager capabilities to have control about what happens in the environment
  • No need to have internal infrastructure to host further than your workstations or terminals
  • No need to have dedicated team for security or endpoint protection
  • Maintenance and updates are available just as released, no need to take actions on that side
  • Great capabilities as a connected threat defense platform
  • Endpoint protection features and quality for SMBs
  • Cloud and collaboration platforms compatible including Office 365, Google Mail and On-Cloud Storage

Cons
Microsoft
  • Not so much a limitation on the software itself, but the fact that is primarily only "signature" based, it cannot detect threats that have mutated.
  • This software provides virtually no protection against zero-day threats.
  • The System Center Endpoint Protection does not offer protections based on behavioral analysis.

  • It would be better if there were an unload password for each policy instead of one for the whole organization.
  • We have one app that gets blocked with no log of any reason why, there should be a better way to troubleshoot that other than just closing the AV every time. Allow listing has not worked in this case.
  • When something is blocked it should specify exactly which setting or feature blocked it to make it easier to use the allow list or adjust.

Usability
Microsoft
It is integrated with Windows and SCCM, making it easy to use, license, manage, and update. Additionally, it is straightforward to diagnose when virus and ransomware alerts are detected on endpoints. IT Service Desk management is also easy.

Installation and administration tools are fantastic. I found the endpoint policies to be not intuitive and clunky. The endpoint client was difficult to disable when trying to troubleshoot Apple issues and I often had to uninstall and then reinstall which was very time-consuming. Reporting is very useful and I was impressed with the reports I received.

Support Rating
Microsoft
Support is pretty good overall. Since it's a Microsoft product, there are a number of different options for either end-users or IT Admins to get help with this product. This includes phone support, email, web KB articles, community forums, etc. This support is also available 24/7, which can't be said the same for every AV product out there. Also, organizations can opt to buy into Enterprise support, which gives the added benefit of faster response times, training by the vendor, etc.

The few times I needed to contact support I was fully satisfied. They worked all the way through the issue, no matter how long it took, and made sure I had a permanent solution. I was pleased with the professionalism, courteousness, and knowledge of the product they were supporting.

Alternatives Considered
Microsoft
Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection was the logical choice for our organization since we were utilizing so many other Microsoft solutions. We have since realized the need for more advanced threat protections and primarily use SCEP as an additional level of protection. Our primary protection is being provided by Carbon Black because of it's advanced heuristics and behavioral analysis capabilities

Avast was clunky, difficult to roll out, missed loads of malware on machines, and required that we purchase a separate license to install AV on our servers. Trend Micro could not have been any different. You just contact their sales department and get a demo, or even ask for a trial of sorts to test policy creations and client installation. You'll be obsessed with the whole process and the admin dashboard you have access to.

Return on Investment
Microsoft
  • The Windows 11 version of SCEP is significantly better than the Windows 10 and older iterations, and it has saved us from virus issues in the past.
  • This is faster and less work to deploy to a pc when we build and deploy them.
  • No extra admin and costs for AV licensing in our case, which makes renewal times easier on IT Management.

  • It has stopped several malicious items from getting into our system.
  • It's also saved money over our previous Anti-Virus solution (Kaspersky)
  • Ease of Setup/Use
