Likelihood to Recommend

Notepad++

This is an absolute must have for any IT professional to have in their toolkit, especially if there's a possibility of utilizing programming languages. If you have to create or modify scripts, or even do basic HTML editing, this software is for you. I would think that users outside of IT wouldn't have much of a need for this software, though.

Vim

I would recommend Vim in any scenario where text files have to be viewed, created, or edited on GNU/Linux computers. Regardless if you need to quickly change a few things in a configuration file, or you need to write up a full document, Vim is great.I wouldn't use Vim to view, edit, or create anything that requires "rich-text". In other words, if you need to format the text (bolding, font colours, word-art, etc), then Vim isn't the tool to use.

Pros

Notepad++

  • Text Manipulation - You can easily edit and reorganize large sets of text. It's an amazing text editor.
  • Plug in Support - There are so many plugins. My favorite is the difftool. Takes two files and shows you were the differences are in each one.
  • Multiple Language Support - Supports the syntax for many languages, some that don't have IDE support like Visual Studio. Helps with writing code.

Vim

  • The efficient modal editing makes it very fast to write/edit code as I think of it.
  • The customization and wide range of plugins let me do very specific things and automate parts of my workflow.
  • The fact that it runs inside a terminal simplifies my window management and just becomes another Tmux window in my workflow.

Cons

Notepad++

  • It is only available for Windows (sorry, Linux and Mac users!).
  • It lacks some of the features of higher-order integrated development environments or code editors like Visual Studio Code, such as integration with Git or other versioning tools.
  • It works best for small text files and lighter tasks such as indenting text blocks you copy and paste from elsewhere. You could use this for all your programming needs, but there are better options out there for a primary tool for that purpose.

Vim

  • Without a doubt the hardest program to learn. It is a completely different paradigm of thinking compared to other editors
  • By default it doesn't have lots of fancy features you would find in larger IDE programs like code completion and linking
  • It lives in the command line so a user has to be comfortable with this interface

I don't consider the steep learning curve to be a hinderance on the overall usability. I would rate this a ten, but to be honest a lot of people do get hung up at the beginning and just abandon it. However, for people who have made the moderate effort to get over the hump, nothing can be more usable.

I haven't needed to utilize any support related to Notepad++. I guess this is a good thing because I found it to be quite intuitive. There are almost infinite features you can tweak and plugins you can download but I haven't had to do that because Notepad++ is really good right out of the box.

There is no commercial support for Vim. Thus, it will not get a mark beyond 5. However, community support is very good. You can easily find solutions for most of the problems in the community.

Alternatives Considered

Notepad++

I have evaluated UltraEdit. At $99 for an individual license, UltraEdit is quite expensive. Notepad++ is FREEAdditionally, UltraEdit has a much larger footprint and is therefore relatively slow to load. For these reasons, I choose to use Notepad++ as my primary editor

Vim

Vim's keybindings are a lot more complex than Notepad++. With that, comes a whole bunch of capability that Notepad++ just can't match. Emacs is comparable, in terms of capabilities--because Vim is built into so many unix systems, I chose to learn it instead of Emacs. Knowing both probably isn't a bad idea, but there's enough to learn in either camp to keep you busy

Return on Investment

Notepad++

  • The reduced time it takes to read and analyze code due to Notepad++'s features (color-coding syntax, automatic formatting), has increased personal productivity of all users.
  • Notepad++ being free and not requiring licenses means the department budget is not negatively impacted whatsoever.
  • The relatively small size of the application allows for a quick install. Additionally, the innocuous nature of the app makes it an easy candidate for installation for those in organizations where you are not an administrator and need help-desk approval in order to install applications.

Vim

  • It always increases productivity.
  • Sometimes feature discovery is not easy. It could be documented well like how to install a plugin and if it supported well or not.
