I was looking for something free, and ProjectLibre met my needs. I had used another Gantt program, but it was discontinued. TeamGantt has also been introduced, and I tried it but came back to ProjectLibre because of familiarity.
Chose ProjectLibre
ProjectLibre is open-sourced, so constantly on the verge of getting better. I think this one is more suited against other workflow programs because it is built for function and (like referenced in another section) not meant to be something you can distract your boss with to …

Chose TeamGantt
TeamGantt was the most familiar name amongst them all. Because I had also used TeamGantt before, it was easier to bring this one is above the others. They all have their perks, but I felt that TeamGantt had that ease of use and familiarity which gave them the edge over the …

ProjectLibre
As a project management tool, especially with more straightforward timelines and components, ProjectLibre is a great alternative to some of the costly PM software tools. I have managed many projects with both MS Project and ProjectLibre, and I think ProjectLibre is a great alternative, especially when I've worked in regions of the world where users cannot afford other PM tools.

TeamGantt
TeamGantt is wonderful for organizing long and short term projects that have lots of tasks and or people involved. I love that it's "in the cloud" so I can manage no matter where I am or what device I'm using. There is a mobile app that is quite easy to use and sized nicely for people who have trouble reading small/fine print. I find it to be a well-suited tool for ongoing projects where the tasks change weekly - I use it for my newsletter planning. You can assign and label tasks which is super convenient for me and my Team. All through the week we are making changes and suggestions in TeamGantt and as we get closer to publication day we mark the stories and objects as done so we know we will finish everything before our deadline.

Pros
ProjectLibre
  • ProjectLibre is great for project management. It allows us to establish milestones and timeline planning for projects.
  • It allows us to stay organized among multiple projects.
  • It is extremely simple to use with a simple interface. It takes little time to plan out a project with key dates and provides a nice graphic.

  • In TeamGantt, clients can remark on any undertaking and keep their visits inside the errands.
  • Reports can likewise be connected to any undertaking. Clients can channel the errands by the due date and what their identity is relegated to, and they can change over Gantt graphs into PDFs.
  • The arrangement is accessible for each client each month's membership premise and offers support using telephone and email.

Cons
ProjectLibre
  • Customer service is not there - I understand that the product is open source but some kind of forum with FAQs, etc. can come in handy
  • App crashes at time for no reason. There have been instances where you try to create a new task and all the diagrams and other items get messed up

  • Task assignment matrix is a bit clunky. It's a bit difficult to see distribution of work for each assignee, but not impossible.

ProjectLibre
There are a lot of discussions online about it, and a customer addition based manual. While that can lead to some confusion, I am not the kind of person who likes talking on the phone. So it is easier to go online with ProjectLibre!

I never interacted with them. That, in itself, I feel represents their quality. They made the resources available to me so that when I started to have a question, the answer was either right there for me, or easy to figure out without any trouble. So, I never felt the need!

Alternatives Considered
ProjectLibre
We decided to go with ProjectLibre because it is a free tool and there is a great community that supports us in case there are any questions or concerns about the software. This has allowed us to be able to invest time without having to worry about licensing costs or anything else.

Our team uses ClickUp for task management. ClickUp has a Gantt chart feature, but it's based solely on the tasks we create in ClickUp, so in order to create a client-facing chart, we'd have to completely change the way we assign tasks to our internal team. We use TeamGantt for the sole purpose of creating project plans and viewing project statuses at-a-glance. You might be able to use it for task management, but we don't.

Return on Investment
ProjectLibre
  • ProjectLibre is free so it has allowed us to collaborate on MS Project files for users that run a Mac or Linux machine
  • Learning curve is minimal since it so closely resembles MS Project
  • Not all MS Project features (especially the newer editions) are present but it's best for users that are not the primary PM to user ProjectLibre.

TeamGantt
  • TeamGantt has had an overall incredible return on investment.
  • In the past, we have tracked strategies/projects manually (MS Excel, etc.). Having a tool like TeamGantt has improved our efficiency greatly.
  • The ability to see where a project stands (intra-department) at-a-glance has improved our ability to observe statuses.
  • TeamGantt has definitely helped remind me to drive on projects that would normally have gone "stale."
