SAP SQL Anywhere
SAP SQL Anywhere is better than not using a database, let's be clear there! However, I wouldn't pick it as my first or even second or third choice. I'd recommend looking at other options. Largely, it appears less powerful both in terms of its robustness and general performance and in its implementation of SQL. The standard Sybase utilities provided are lacking in basic features, and the interactive SQL utility is quite horrendous. However, the great thing is it is an ODBC-compliant SQL-compliant relational database.

Microsoft SQL Server
Ultimately [Microsoft SQL Server] is fairly easy to set up and easy to use if you have knowledge of relational databases and how they work. Being from Microsoft it is a well known, widely used robust piece of software that is ever evolving and plenty of related information can be found all over the internet in various guises such as forums and blogs.

Pros
SAP SQL Anywhere
- The ability to host network database services and the ability to manage them.

Microsoft SQL Server
- Stored procedures, efficient and so much easier to update business logic when under pressure!
- High availability always on groups (since 2012), is pretty easy to set up and just works - has been an absolute savior on 2 server failures.
- Fairly straightforward to administer out the box as it were (but this can be enhanced see below).
- So widely used that someone somewhere has probably faced the same challenges that you have so [to] find a guide, solution, suggested path is relatively easy (not strictly a SQL server thing but makes a massive difference knowing that you have access to huge resource with a well supported well adopted piece of software).
- Very well supported in terms of third party software to enhance administration (backups, performance, etc.).

SAP SQL Anywhere
- I think it should be more user friendly for non-technical users.
- More functional functionalities should be added to the object explore when working with a table to transform data/manipulate data.

Microsoft SQL Server
- Partitioning does not provide as many options as Oracle (like Foreign Key partitioning, list partitions, hash partitioning and sub partitions)
- The default READ COMMITED isolation level block readers, so it is important to use the READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT option, that should be default right now...

We are a Microsoft Gold partner and are very in depth with our SQL server development with out software and it would take too many resources to try and switch to another database product, not to mention all of our clients run SQL Server so we would then have to support SQL and another product which is fiscally irresponsible.

SQL Server mostly 'just works' or generates error messages to help you sort out the trouble. You can usually count on the product to get the job done and keep an eye on your potential mistakes. Interaction with other Microsoft products makes operating as a Windows user pretty straight forward. Digging through the multitude of dialogs and wizards can be a pain, but the answer is usually there somewhere.

We managed to handle most of our problems by looking into Microsoft's official documentation that has everything explained and almost every function has an example that illustrates in detail how a particular functionality works. Just like PowerShell has the ability to show you an example of how some cmdlet works, that is the case also here, and in my opinion, it is a very good practice and I like it.

As mentioned before, the implementation of SQL Server in a company that is beginning to use a new structure, which does not require any type of data migration, do not requires particular comment to make.
If you must to do a porting of databases from a different platform, definitely you need to consider the situation in detail depending on your needs.

Alternatives Considered
SAP SQL Anywhere
As compared to others, SAP SQL Anywhere requires much less effort to install, setup and manage, and the support team from SAP is always there. You have very good support for this DB as many experts have improved the documentation which are easy to accumulate for your team..small and regular queries to execute are running flawlessly with speedy performance.

Since we run a .NET shop I'm not able to speak too much on how it compares to the alternatives. I would say in our dealings with MYSQL demonstrated that Microsoft SQL Server is less complicated to get up and running initially. The user interface of MYSQL seemed to be complex and require a lot of reading documentation before you could start running it

Return on Investment
SAP SQL Anywhere
- Skilled/experienced resources are less prominent than Microsoft SQL Server or even Oracle, or MySQL, so finding solutions and assistance, if needed, takes more time than it would with other platforms
- You will need to find a good SQL query tool by yourself because the Sybase Central / Interactive SQL utilities are lacking in many basic features, and just generally have a bad user interface

- Since SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition, Microsoft has been offering these tools free of charge. The ROI is mainly focused around training investment. We do the training in-house, so the ROI is around one year.
- The cost-benefit ratio offered by Microsoft's data warehouse solutions is, by a long shot, much more convenient for our customers, small and medium-sized companies, than solutions from other vendors.
- Every system upgraded will benefit; from the improvements in Clustered ColumnStore, to increased throughput in Always On Availability Groups, to the enhancements of In Memory OLTP, not to mention the new security features.
- We implemented with an in-house team only, with proper, prior training that was also done in-house.
