Global Shop Solutions ERP encompasses most of our business. We use it for cost tracking, inventory movements, accounting, quality, and more. Out of the box, Global Shop Solutions ERP solves most business problems. We've been able to implement custom solutions using Global Shop Solutions ERP's GAB programming language and continue to find ways to customize the software and make it more meaningful for our company.

Pros

  • Flexibility. The amount of customizations available with and without Global Shop Solutions ERP programming are phenomenal.
  • Visibility. There are so many ways to find and report on information.
  • Auditing. Being able to see who did something is pretty good across the system and can be even more in depth with some key options turned on.
  • Service. The Global Shop Solutions ERP service department is amazing and can solve most questions with one phone call. In the instance it's a deeper issue, they're usually resolved fairly quickly as well and I love that they do always end up finding the solution.

Cons

  • The Quality modules could use a revamp.
  • The table structure is the hardest part to learn because it's a little all over the place. If this was streamlined, people would be able to accomplish more.
  • There are so many menu options they can get overwhelming. You can limit the impact on users by not giving permissions to the extra items, but it's also difficult to manage on the permissions side because of the sheer number of options. Function level security added a whole other layer of permissions that need to be maintained. Once it's set up, it's easy enough to maintain, but getting there is hard.

We've run Global Shop Solutions ERP in several different business models and all of them have worked well. Repair: this is primarily customer supplied material, always new situations that are assessed AFTER the product arrives. Job Shop: These jobs are less guesswork, but still different every time. Engineering BOM's: These are a lot of assembly, less machining, but a huge amount of work in setting up the BOM's. Repeat Jobs: There are slight variations, but the overall process remains the same for all parts. In all 4 business situations Global Shop Solutions ERP has been able to meet the need, albeit differently. This is the strongest indicator that Global Shop Solutions ERP will work in MOST situations. Their flexibility makes everything possible.

We needed a unified solution to run our shop, collect costs, track employee time, and manage sales orders and shipping. Global Shop Solutions ERP provides that platform. Using Global Shop Solutions ERP's capabilities, we've been able to reduce the amount of time needed for things as varied as payroll and cost report. And using Global Shop Solutions ERP helps eliminate inadvertent errors.

  • provide a smooth path from customer order to invoicing and payment

Cons

  • I'm getting old, so ways to change (increase) the fonts on more screens would be much appreciated.

I love that Global Shop Solutions ERP is more accessible than many bigger (and thus more locked-down) ERP systems. This means that I can quickly write custom reports from our data tables without having to pay someone else to do it.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a manufacturer of secondary packaging equipment (case packers, case erectors, palletizers), we rely on Global Shop Solutions ERP for end-to-end operations in our made-to-order environment. Daily activities include sales quoting and order entry, engineering importing CAD BOMs, planners, shop floor jobs, assemblers clocking time and reporting progress via terminals, inventory teams issuing materials, and managing purchasing/receiving, and shipping coordinating deliveries. The system solved long-standing issues such as inaccurate inventory which led to poor visibility into job costs, scheduling delays, and disconnected departments.

Our scope is comprehensive, utilizing most modules: quoting, BOM, engineering integration, inventory, advanced planning/scheduling, shop floor data collection, quality, purchasing, job costing/accounting, and shipping. Global Shop Solutions ERP provides real-time visibility to all of our departments, ensuring accurate material/labor tracking and it has really helped us get control of the balance of our physical inventory and inventory dollars.

Pros

  • The fact that it is always live and updating constantly is very helpful to our processes.
  • The cross-module integration is seamless, allowing for what has been done in one department to populate into the fields of another screen quickly.
  • I cannot say enough about the support team both through the 800 number and through our CI Manager, and the weekly "Friday Features" learning opportunities. If you don't learn the system it is because you have not put forth any effort whatsoever.

Cons

  • In polling our team, the CRM is not as organic to customer management and does not work as well as other CRM specific programs PipeDrive or SalesForce.
  • Sometimes fixes for issues come with significant VT time charges.
  • We recently upgraded to 2023.1 and so we are seeing a number of improvements. The UI is still a bit dated, however in some respects, with it requiring opening a number of windows to get answers.

Likelihood to Recommend

We have already met with three companies in our region and hosted them for several hours to see how we utilize Global Shop Solutions ERP in our daily work. This speaks to our satisfaction with the software, as well as our ongoing commitment to the notion that if you want to learn something well, learn to teach it. We have a great group of users here who participate in the weekly Friday Features and who try to utilize all of the modules to their full effect to benefit not only individual workflows, but to help the entire company output. It is well suited in our experience for manufacturing. That is the only scenario where we have experience or where we feel we can make a judgement call.

Because many of our workflows are customized and differ from conventional production processes, most off-the-shelf ERP systems are unable to fully support them and often require us to make significant changes to fit their limitations. In contrast, GSS has been able to adapt to our operations and accommodate our specific needs, helping us automate many of our processes effectively. Furthermore, their team not only implements solutions that align with our business model but also advises and corrects us when certain practices can be improved, ensuring that our systems run more efficiently and in line with best practices.

As a mid-size manufacturing organization, we use Global Shop Solutions ERP as an end-to-end ERP solution, managing most aspects of our business including quotes, orders, shop floor routing and control, inventory, and accounting.

Pros

  • Support is good. We can consistently speak to a helpful human within two minutes during business hours.
  • Shop floor control is fully featured and is one of the strengths of the system. There is a wide range of configurability out of the box and further customization is possible with add-ins or GAB programming.
  • Customizability is strong. With GAB, there's a nearly unlimited amount of building and customization that can be done to the system.
  • High value of what you get with what you pay for.

Cons

  • Global Shop is well over 40 years old already. While the company is clearly trying to modernize the platform, I feel they are weighed down with a lot of tech debt and it seems that they are struggling to keep up with more modern system. In my opinion, the tech debt comes out in reliance on Zen/Pervasive databases, inconsistent UI/UX, and lack of API support (coming, purportedly).
  • UI/UX is terrible in my experience. Finding anything is very difficult and most users simply memorize the path to the items they need and never use the system outside of what they know.
  • A simple example: to view a previously created invoice, one might expect to navigate to invoices, find the appropriate invoice from a list, and click to view. In Global Shop the menu path is Customers & Prospects > Order Entry > Reports > Reprint Invoice. Completely unintuitive in my opinion. To my knowledge, there is no "Invoice" button that shows simply all invoices without a custom plugin.
  • Zen/Pervasive database may be fine for smaller environments, but issues start coming up with larger datasets and compatibility issues in development environments where Microsoft SQL Server is considered a standard.
  • Tech debt leads to constant bugfixes, and new features seem to be frequently broken on release or break previously established functionality. This can be exacerbated in environments with heavy GAB customization where database and method changes may break existing GAB functionality.

Likelihood to Recommend

Global Shop Solutions ERP would be an OK fit for small to medium size manufacturing operations with requirements for strong shop floor control tools and ability to write customizations for the interface. The program is probably overkill for very small environments and will probably be outgrown by larger businesses that need scalability and integrations with platforms outside the ERP.

Pros

  • You are not allowed to back date.
  • I love the fact that our parent company has easy access to our information. This is helpful when I run into a problem.

Cons

  • The reports are not user friendly most of the time.
  • For most of our products, they are unique so creating the BOM is very time consuming for our engineer.

Likelihood to Recommend

For a first time ERP user, I was intimidated by the system, but once you get acclimated to the process, it's not that bad.

We would not be doing business if we wouldn't have Global Shop Solutions ERP. Most of our employees would quit if we didn't have it anymore. It does everything for us from Customer Service to organizing shop flow & detailed Financial statements. A huge thing for us is that we know the exact cost for every single job before it even leaves our dock. We know exactly where we are making money and where we are losing and can adjust accordingly.

If you are involved with manufacturing this is a great solution. It does an excellent job of tracking costs for each and every job. We do thousands of jobs per month, big and small and each one is captured accurately. It keeps jobs flowing smoothly & is very nice to add details for specific steps on each job station.

We use Global Shop Solutions to help cost out our products. In the past, this was just a guess. With this software, we can determine how much it costs to manufacture a part from start to finish. We use Global Shop Solutions from "quote to cash". Almost every aspect of Global Shop Solutions is used in one way or another. It has helped us in our shipping department to palletize and mark our shipments better than we had in the past. It has also helped considerably with our inventory issues. We now know how much inventory we have on hand and where it is located.

Pros

  • Their customer service goes above and beyond
  • I think the system is very easy to use
  • They are always one step ahead in upgrading

Cons

  • When releasing new screens, they are not complete and you end up using the legacy screens instead of fully integrating to a new screen
  • when they release hot patches, we usually end up with more things to fix and were fixed in the hot patch.

Likelihood to Recommend

I like the SFDC screens for the manufacturing floor. There is no need for licenses for these and the amount of information that is available suits our needs. We somtimes have rush orders and it seems to take more time to collect data in Global Shop Solutions than it does to make the parts

We use Global Shop Solutions to do our daily transactions including tracking work orders, inventory, shipping, receiving, purchasing, and everything in between. Global Shop Solutions provide clarity with our inventory values, helps quote by providing estimates and actuals for each job, and track employee performance. The new automatic purchasing screen provides a quick overview of everything making it easy to purchase goods within one screen, quickly and efficiently.

Pros

  • Store historic data and present it in grid view, easy sort
  • Allow custom everything, anything we can dream of you can do
  • Great customer service, always there, normally little wait

Cons

  • lead time for quotes for custom projects
  • letting the customer know of new things

Likelihood to Recommend

Global Shop Solutions is well suited for the quote to cash process, making it easy for a single user to run through all the steps, it is less appropriate in helping with payroll and tracking employee training.

Without an ERP, we would still be stuck manually tracking everything. Global Shop Solutions helps us save time and ensures that our outputs are as accurate as possible.

Likelihood to Recommend

We have had a good overall experience with Global Shop Solutions. Even when there are areas that lack, they are very responsive and open to improving their product. I don't know of any other ERP where you can call the CEO directly out of the blue to express concerns and/or give praise for their company and employees.
