What is Google Compute Engine?

Google Compute Engine is an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) product from Google Cloud. It provides virtual machines with carbon-neutral infrastructure which run on the same data centers that Google itself uses.

Predefined Machine Types
Virtual machine configurations for micro instances to instances with up to 160 vCPUs and 3.75 TB of memory

Custom Machine Types
Or create and customized, virtual machines with the shape (i.e. vCPU and memory) needed for each project

Persistent Disks
Network storage, up to 64 TB in size, can be attached to VMs as persistent disks. Create persistent disks in HDD or SSD formats. If a VM instance is terminated, its persistent disk retains data and can be attached to another instance. Take snapshots create new persistent disks from that snapshot.

Local SSD
Always-encrypted local solid-state drive (SSD) block storage. Local SSDs are physically attached to the server hosting the virtual machine instance. Local SSD sizes up to 3 TB are available for any VM with at least 1 vCPU.

Global Load Balancing
Distributes incoming requests across pools of instances across multiple regions.

Batch Processing
For running large compute and batch jobs using Preemptible VMs. Features fixed pricing and no contracts or reservations. Activated by checking a box when creating the VM, and then they can be turned off when the work is done.

Containers
For running, managing, and orchestrating Docker containers directly on Compute Engine VMs or with Google Kubernetes Engine.

The user interface is fast loading, quick to navigate and delivers the basic information rapidly and in a clean UI, as is common with Google interfaces. The CLI is chock full of options - good and bad, as some commands are very long, but cleaner to type than AWS equivalents.

Having interacted with several cloud services, GCE stands out to me as more usable than most. The naming and locating of features is a little more intuitive than most I've interacted with, and hinting is also quite helpful. Getting staff up to speed has proven to be overall less painful than others.

Google Compute Engine offers great functionality. It's easy to manage and deploy. It can be used by any person without any knowledge with its intuitive dashboards. You can easily generate and personalize reports. We can give 10 points out of 10 points for usability. We recommend Google Compute Engine for small and big companies. Also the migration from hardware to visualized servers from Google Compute Engine is easy, inclusive with the support of Google.

Google Cloud Compute Engine works well with individuals that are experienced analysts. Google appears to be targeting professional analysts rather than first-time analytics professionals or individuals that just want to play around in the cloud. Although it takes a little bit of effort to figure things out, working with Google Cloud Compute Engine is fairly straight-forward now.

Our engineers are provided with many options to interact with GCE. The web UI and console is a fantastic way to see the available options, manage right-sizing, seeing improvements made to the service, and monitoring deployments. The CLI is also incredibly helpful for mass deployment or bulk work, allowing the scripting of workloads and scaling rules easily and quickly.

Google Compute Engine gives you the flexibility of virtualization for a wide range of computing solutions: development and testing, running applications, and extending your datacenter with support for Linux, Windows Server, SQL Server, Oracle, IBM, and SAP. Very easy to use and very good reports to monitor the cloud.
