BigFix - A good tool set that requires investment of time and money to realize the ROI expected

Rating: 6 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

BigFix is being used across the organization for software deployment and patching purposes as well as asset management information for our end user devices and enterprise infrastructure assets. It centralizes our patching deployment processes as well as our software inventory collection. In addition, we ensure that our asset information is all consolidated into BigFix which we then draw a report out of and use to enhance our CMDB.

Pros

  • Software inventory.
  • Patch deployment.
  • Patch review.

Cons

  • Customization.
  • Simplified reporting (management level).
  • Guides for administrators to use in their everyday work.

Likelihood to Recommend

BigFix is well suited for patch review and deployment, but there are key features that can definitely be improved. An example is that if a specific patch is deployed, but a cumulative update that contains that patch is not deployed, the system still shows the patch as outstanding or not implemented.

Another area for improvement is the customization of BigFix. The tool has many uses and can be extremely helpful, but the amount of knowledge required to customize the solution is significant and customized scripts or "fixlets" need to be created. If common things could be pre-packaged and provided to the customer community, it would allow for an easier deployment and use of the tool.

Your mileage may vary.

The product does a good job with hardware and software inventory, and some basic or simple software distribution. It is designed to patch computers, including Windows and Linux, but this function can be improved for robustness and more compatible with the OS vendor's method.<img src="https://craftprimes.com/metric/?mid=&amp;wid=52505&amp;sid=&amp;tid=8289&amp;rid=LOADED&amp;custom1=www.trustradius.com&amp;custom2=%2Fadmin%2Freviews%2F5e2a67080e5d7c0038baa81d%2Fedit&amp;custom3=craftprimes.com&amp;t=1579902762718" style="width:0;height:0;display:none;visibility:hidden;"><img src="https://craftprimes.com/metric/?mid=&amp;wid=52505&amp;sid=&amp;tid=8289&amp;rid=BEFORE_OPTOUT_REQ&amp;t=1579902762718" style="width:0;height:0;display:none;visibility:hidden;"><img src="https://craftprimes.com/metric/?mid=&amp;wid=52505&amp;sid=&amp;tid=8289&amp;rid=FINISHED&amp;custom1=www.trustradius.com&amp;t=1579902762722" style="width:0;height:0;display:none;visibility:hidden;">

BigFix Review

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use BigFix for patching our workstations, and also for asset management. We have 3000 endpoints that are being patched with BigFix.

Pros

  • Custom patch packages are easy to set up and allows for use with a repository.
  • Asset management by use of agents is simple and allows for user assignment by the device.
  • Reporting has a large variety of templates.

Cons

  • Reports that it does have could be fine-tuned and provide more percentages and charts for executives.
  • The ability to use agentless deployments would be nice.

Likelihood to Recommend

BigFix does one thing really well and that is patch deployment. The use of agents allows for real-time reporting so you know the status of each device prior to deploying any new patches.
