SolarWinds is used internally for our own infrastructure as well as for customers. SolarWinds is been used as the core network monitoring solution suite which does end to end network monitoring and provides visibility around each site and location's network infrastructure for any fault and performance. It also does IP Address Management, Voice Call Quality Monitoring and Netpath Services monitoring for SaaS applications like Office365.
  • NetPath Services Hop by Hop ANalysis
  • Netflow Monitoring
  • Network Devices Configuration Backup and Configuration Push
  • Voice Call Quality Services
  • Support for more call infra provider vendors
  • Cloud Network Monitoring
  • Event Management
  • Predictive Intelligence using AIOps and ML
Well Suited Areas -
1. Network Fault and Performance Monitoring
2. Network Devices Configuration Backup and Configuration Push
3. Netflow Analysis
4. Call Quality Monitoring for Cisco and Avaya
5. Users Ports Management
6. DSN/DHCP Monitoring
7. Alerting and Integration

Not Well Suited -

1. Predictive Intelligence based Alerting or data analysis
2. REST API Based Monitoring.
3. SD-WAN Monitoring
  • SNMP Monitirng
  • Traps and Syslog Data Analysis
  • Incident Management for Faults in Service Now
  • Reporting and Dashboard
  • Our Network Health has improved with Proactive Monitoring
  • Cost reduction on additional products like PowerBI for Reporting
  • Service Now Integration was easy enough and hence less efforts and cost
Solarwinds is cost effective and easy to install and maintain solution. Anyone can install and operate the same whereas other tools like LogicMonitor, Microfocus needs specialized skill.

SolarWinds provides rich MIB OID support that means you do not have to worry about devices supportability, in case there are new vendor with new MIBS then also you do not have to worry about this as Vendor itself does that part whereas other tools like Microfocus does not support this and LM do have MIB complier itself.

Parameters are already enabled in SolarWinds and hence less chance of customization required. Whereas Microfocus and LM requires customization efforts.

Solarwinds does not have SD-WAN so does Microfocus but LogicMonitor seem pretty good in SD-WAN comparatively.

We ae using Solarwinds NAM (Network Automation Manager) for our end customers. We implement this product to monitor and manage our end custom Network infrastructure end to end. One of the module of NAM i.e. NCM is used for devices configuration backup and compliances monitoring. IPAM is used for IP Addresses management.
  • Fault and Performance Monitoring
  • Devices Configuration Backup
  • IP Address Management
  • Voice Infrastructure Monitoring
  • Users Ports monitoring
  • Netflow Traffic Utilization
  • Event Management
  • REST API Pollers
  • Telemetry Data
Solarwinds NAM is well suited if you want following -
1. Monitor multiple vendor devices from single tool.
2. Multiple capabilities from one umbrella tool.
3. Easy and default integration with ITSM Solution.
4. API driven architecture and hence automation can be done easily.

If you planning to monitor SD-WAN devices then Solarwinds may not be good solution as it does not have in-built pollers for the same like for devices v-manage, viptela etc. In this case either you have to leverage native solutions and integrate with Solarwinds or use different solutions.
  • Centralized Network Monitoring
  • Centralized Syslog and Traps Capturing Solution
  • Bandwidth Utilization Monitoring
  • One Vendor
  • One Tool
  • Easy Integrations
  • Centralized Monitoring
  • One Console for monitoring
Well Solarwinds is placed much ahead of these products because of the following reasons -

One single tool which can perform Fault, Performance Monitoring, Network Bandwidth Utilization, Devices configuration backup, IP Address Management, NetPath, Voice Infra Monitoring, Traps and Syslog Logging, Alerting's, Users Ports Monitoring, Rpeorting etc and hence this make Solarwinds a complete solutions. Whereas other products Like Microfocus requires multiple modules and installation is not easy.

LogicMonitor on the other side is well competing (Specially SD-WAN Monitoring) with Solarwinds but it still lacks Devices Configuration Push feature, IP Address Management, NetPath, Users Port Monitoring etc.
