Reliable Choice but Youll Need a Little Tech Help to Configure

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are longtime SonicWall TZ customers and currently use a TZ270W to support our SMB - 15 user operation. Being a smaller organization we do no have on-site technical resources so a few of us step in to handle basic functions like applying firmware upgrades. In the past we have reached out to SonicWall TZ Support for configuration issues. Security is a complex topic and we feel we are protected with SonicWall TZ but could use more assistance to make sure our configuration utilizes the options that the SonicWall TZ presents.
In addition, we find that the wireless WIFI produces a generally weak signal unless you are in the same room as the TZ270W - we use an extender to pump up the signal into offices that are further away from the SonicWall TZ - this issue was less of a problem with our previous SonicWall TZ unit before we upgraded. Not interested in changing from SonicWall TZ - probably just have to become more proficient in managing the device.

Pros

  • Scanning inbound email and attachments
  • Blocking potentially malicious programs
  • Ability to manage access to websites (whitelist and blacklist)

Cons

  • There are Service Bundles in SonicWall TZ that are Unlicensed and do not know why they have not be Activated - would need help to further understand benefits
  • Do not know why Standard Support is Unlicensed
  • WiFi range of TZ270W is very limited - need to add Access Points or Extended to obtain adequate coverage

Likelihood to Recommend

Good price for scope of functionality
Challenge for those that are not highly technical
Many options within Firewall Setting that need to understood to maximize use of the device. Would be nice to see some sort of configuration wizard to assist in configuring unit.

SonicWall TZ.. Our Saving Grace

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have a pair of SonicWall TZ working in a HA configuration - these are running our production, telephony, guest and maintenance vlans. With full DPI, SSO and Capture ATP activate and fully integrated with our on prem AD. This allows full minitoring and scanning of all our traffic with minimal overheads being noticed

Pros

  • DPI Inspection
  • Capture ATP - Almost invisibly monitors files downloaded
  • New improved user interaface
  • Simple rule management

Cons

  • Some logs are hard to find and understand
  • VOIP setup can be difficult
  • SSO agents when they fail can be hard to troubleshoot

Likelihood to Recommend

SonicWall TZ has been an almost perfect fit on pur enviroment - with the ability to to have a HA pair that keep in sync almost live it has enabled us to perform update tasks, configuration changes etc.. while our production enviroment has been live. Our main critisism is the forks of the firmware can become confusing with often two different versions available that are not compatible with each other

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use multiple SonicWall TZ devices across several of our locations to act as a firewall as well as enabling VPN connections back to the main office. Our business has also subscribed to the content filter and antivirus components. One of our SonicWall TZ devices also has wireless capability, which is very useful as that office location is a shared space.

Pros

  • VPN tunneling
  • Antivirus
  • Security
  • Content filtering

Cons

  • Some of the settings related to maintaining industry standards are hard to find.
  • It’s hard to remove unwanted access rules when they are linked to other things.
  • I would like to see more documentation on best practices.

Likelihood to Recommend

Our SonicWall TZ device that has wireless capability is very useful and has a large range for devices in multiple places. The antivirus feature adds an extra layer of protection. Content filtering is very useful when keeping employees in adherence to the computer policies we have. Sometimes the figuration can be a bit difficult, but customer support is always very helpful.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

They provide the network firewall for our 50 locations across the East Coast. We are able to remotely able to manage them.

Pros

  • Remote Management
  • VPN to file servers
  • Protection from online threats

Cons

  • Some of the interfaces could be a little more user friendly

Likelihood to Recommend

We would gladly use them as our firewall vendor moving forward. We can program all filters and necessary firewall rules depending on the needs of our locations.

Easy choice but not for beginners!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our company purchases and technically maintains it infrastructure and networks for small to midsize businesses and we occasionally using SonicWall TZ firewall appliances in upgrades and setups of network security for our clients. It provides firewall protection, antivirus, remote access SSL VPN, as well as branch office (site to site) VPN between multiple locations of our organization.

Pros

  • Firewall Functionality
  • Event Logs
  • Network Interface Management

Cons

  • VPN Software Client seems outdated
  • Firewall & NAT rules interface could be simplified
  • SSL VPN license model is too expensive for larger clients

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited for small/midsize clients. it works well for basic firewall applications and security protection for Internet connection and within network. It is less appropriate for larger clients as we encountered a big cost for our SSL VPN user licenses and they don't provide 2FA support that most companies require now.

Sonicwall TZ - A solid choice for SME's and branch offices

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have deployed Sonicwall TZ devices in our branch offices. These devices are relatively simple (for a business firewall) to set up and the configuration can be used as a template to quickly deploy on devices in other sites. They also have a great graphical interface, in particular the dashboard for overview monitoring which means overall we have firewalls which do not take up excessive staff resources to set up and maintain.

Pros

  • Centralised management
  • Great Graphical user interface
  • Reporting and Analytics

Cons

  • VPN's issues can be a little difficult to pinpoint for the intermediate user. The previous generation software had a GUI for VPN's but this seems to have disappeared in G7?
  • Configuring logging can be difficult when troubleshooting. Get help from support on this if in doubt, it will save you a lot of time!

Likelihood to Recommend

The Sonicwall TZ is a great choice for SME's and small branch offices, you can get up and running relatively quickly on these with a standard configuration or for those wanting to fine tune it is easy to find your way around with the way the interface is split into different sections and headers.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This is a type of equipment used at the branch where I work as an edge firewall. TZ Series is recommended for small and medium environments, but rich in security features, web content filter, antimalware and application visibility. Another important function that this equipment provides us is VPN access to work in the home office.

Pros

  • Visibility and identification of traffic in real time.
  • Web content filter.
  • Anti-malware.

Cons

  • Licenses must be purchased annually.

Likelihood to Recommend

In our scenario, we use it as an edge firewall, in order to filter, identify and block undue traffic and virtual threats. VPN functionality is very required and functional due to the number of employees working in the home office and this allows access to the organization's intranet. Web content filters also help us to block prohibited and inappropriate web pages.
