Overall Satisfaction with AlphaSense
AlphaSense is used as an aggregator of information pertaining to the portfolio companies we cover. Information of interest primarily consists of news, investment research, and earnings publications/transcripts. We have created dashboards for different sets of companies and check them on a daily basis for updated information. We have also set up automated alerts for companies we are actively looking at.
Pros
- Makes it easy to search investment research and earnings transcripts
- Provides summaries of earnings calls
- Provides customization options to tailor dashboards
Cons
- Sentiment and summary analysis should be available for more types of documents
- News sources exclude many popular publishers and include some automated news source by default which do not provide any value -- often see repeat stories drowning out other information
- Updating search criteria and dashboards is tedious -- there is no easy way to exclude news sources you don't want to see throughout the application
- UI/UX could use some improvement; A bit clunky overall and some less than stellar design choices -- i.e., no way to actually look at a list of documents you've booked mark (get lumped in with anything you've ever highlighted), note taking feature needs an overhaul
- Go to source for reviewing earnings and equity research -- have become more efficient and review more of this content
- Has made me more effective at monitoring current events at portfolio companies at taking action in response to certain news articles
News articles have provided some value -- either new deal announcements relating to a competitor or information about a cybersecurity incident we may have otherwise missed. We probably get the most value from seeing daily equity research reports, which is not something we could do in Cap IQ with annoyance/brain damage. If you had the transcript add-on, I imagine that would be helpful in this regard.
If you have Bloomberg, the use case for AlphaSense is probably limited. If you don't have Bloomberg, AlphaSense can replace Capital IQ, and potentially BamSEC (though I still prefer that UI) and provide you with aggregation capabilities at a much lower cost (though obviously without some of the other Bloomberg features).
Tegus, and other transcript libraries like Third Bridge, offer similar content (though I think Third Bridge is higher quality than others). There's no real advantage to AlphaSense for transcripts by themselves, but combined with other capabilities, it does give you an all-in-one search capability which you can't get with other transcript libraries.
