Overall Satisfaction with AlphaSense

I use AlphaSense as an equity research tool for navigating and analyzing financial filings, presentations, transcripts, and financial data.

Pros

  • Document Search

Cons

  • Data quality
  • User Interface
  • Customer support
  • Excel plugin
  • Print formatting
  • Speed up document search and collection
  • Finding specific management comments in transcripts
The equity data offering is very weak. That is a major gap relative to its peers and disappointing since it bought a company (Sentieo) that was a budget option much closer in functionality to peers like CapIQ. The UI looks slick, but in many instances not as usable as it should be. Printing documents is annoying - need to download as PDF first to ensure proper printing instead of printing straight from the platform. Many document email alerts do not have any preview of the document which is annoying because AlphaSense often mistags things (e.g. press releases as "offering memorandums").
AlphaSense's killer feature is the document search. It does a very good job there, but is not good at anything else.
AlphaSense has better document search but is otherwise vastly inferior in every other way. If doc search isn't important to you, I wouldn't bother with AlphaSense.

Do you think AlphaSense delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with AlphaSense's feature set?

No

Did AlphaSense live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of AlphaSense go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy AlphaSense again?

No

AlphaSense is great for document search, but mediocre to bad at everything else. Sentieo, which it acquired, was a superior product but unfortunately its strengths have not been retained post merger. In particular, their fundamentals and pricing data has gotten much worse. The history of data is shorter, more inaccurate, and they still have not figured out how to calculate total returns correctly.
