Overall Satisfaction with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)

Amazon RDS is our default go-to when a cloud service needs a "simple" relational database. It powers a product that has some data to store, nothing too esoteric as database schemas go...

Pros

  • It Just Works.
  • Appearing as Postgres as an option helps comply with basic SQL needs.
  • It provisions quickly and has good performance.

Cons

  • Perhaps expanding for additional types of databases will be helpful for future growth - columnar, vector, etc.
  • As expected, its cost is very minor compared to the EC2 instance cost.

Do you think Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)'s feature set?

Yes

Did Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) again?

Yes

If you just need a database with no particular requirements beyond basic SQL, RDS is hard to beat. It's as commodity as it gets, and it is provisioned quickly, unlike some other AWS services at times. We have had no issues with storage limits or query response times. We only exercised it up to about 20 columns, so we have not tried it past hundreds of columns.
