Storyline was purchased primarily for us to build our eLearning onboarding and compliance programs. We previously flew people all over the world and were able to drastically cut travel costs by implementing eLearning options.

Pros

Easy to pick up if you know PowerPoint
You can easily transform PPT docs into interactive eLearning files
Great online support forums

Cons

It’s hard to create eLearning where you can go backward through the course if you miss something.
Nowadays we are seeing more video eLearning. Storyline is a little outdated
Lack of on the job training tools

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate

Captivate is more advanced for sure. However, it requires a much higher skillet. Storyline is so much easier to pick up and run with.

Likelihood to Recommend

Storyline is great for compliance training. It’s also great for any soft skill training where content doesn’t change. If you are training your systems it’s not a great tool. It takes too long to edit and reshare. Rise is more suited to that.

Since video based eLearning is picking up at a very fast pace, for video based elearning course creation, Captivate allows embedding of videos from Youtube, Vimeo and add video files from the system, add bookmarks, knowledge check, info etc.. which helps the user have a quick self-review and assess themselves. In Storyline customizing and making interactive videos requires lots of work by importing only from the system. Inserting videos from Youtube or Vimeo is challenging and involves a lot of manual steps. Captivate's VR and immersive learning capabilities are great as well. Articulate still needs to get those capabilites.

  Captivate and Articulate are the big players for course content creation and elearning authoring. Specifially in areas of mobile responsiveness, immersive learning, import and embedding of videos from YouTube or Vimeo and backward compatibility, Captivate seems to have the better options.

Storyline is a great tool for getting started with eLearning.
