Overall Satisfaction with Automox

Automation is very important to me because I don’t like doing repetitive tasks if there’s a way to automate them. As a patching solution, Automox performs very well. It would be even more awesome if there was a way to patch running programs. Many errors occur because programs are being patched while running. I appreciate how simple Automox is to use, and another feature I really appreciate is the remote tool. Mostly, I use Teams for remote sessions, but if admin credentials are needed, I usually turn to the remote tool that Automox provides. As long as you have decent PowerShell skills, Automox should be able to handle most of what you need.

Pros

  • remote control
  • power shell execution as system
  • Automation
  • Patching

Cons

  • It would be nice to have an option to run as logged in user with elevated permissions
  • Run as given account (not current user)
  • for some reason Automox defaults to using 32-bit PowerShell and for some reason this does not work for adding registry keys. As a work around, we have been forcing running the 64-bit powershell.exe and executing a script block. This is fine but would be better if it defaulted to 64-bit
  • Automox is easier to use and is cloud based. Our previous patching tool was PDQ deploy, and this tool only worked well on the LAN.
Pathing did get better after switching to Automox, mainly because it is a cloud-based solution.
I give it a nine out of ten for the same reasons I mentioned in a previous question, but for usability it is very simple to use, you just need decent powershell skills.
  • PDQ Deploy & Inventory
Automox is cloud-based which makes it a much better product in todays world.

Do you think Automox delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Automox's feature set?

Yes

Did Automox live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Automox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Automox again?

Yes

PDQ Deploy & Inventory
The reason I would score it a nine is because of the inability to “run as.” Since it only runs as a system, this makes some tasks impossible. It would be beneficial to have an encrypted set of credentials in the UI that we can use to “run as,” and also the ability to run as the current user with elevated permissions would be nice. In terms of patching, Automox does a good job, and being able to use Automox to run PowerShell on a computer without needing to open up ports for WinRM is a great feature.
