Overall Satisfaction with AWS Cloud9

We use AWS Cloud9 as a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) for building, running, and debugging applications directly in the browser. It provides developers with a consistent and preconfigured environment, removing the need to manually set up local machines. Our teams access their projects securely from anywhere and collaborate in real-time, which is especially useful given our distributed workforce.

Pros

  • Consistent, Secure Development Environments
  • Real-Time Collaboration
  • Seamless AWS Service Integration

Cons

  • Complex Pricing & Lifecycle Management
  • Limited Customization
  • Performance & Latency
  • Idle workspace costs reduce overall cost savings.
  • Real-time collaboration improves productivity and efficiency.
  • Faster onboarding, reducing developer ramp-up time.
I rated AWS Cloud9’s usability an 8/10 because it’s intuitive, easy to get started with, and integrates seamlessly with AWS services, but it lacks the speed and flexibility of more mature local IDEs.

GitHub, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), AWS Backup
AWS Cloud9 is well suited for quickly onboarding developers, AWS-native development like Lambda and S3 workflows, and real-time collaboration across distributed teams. It’s less appropriate for very large or complex applications where performance lags, or when projects require heavy local tooling and custom plugins. Since it’s fully cloud-based, it also isn’t practical for offline development scenarios.
